The Venezuelan crisis: Economy and Society
The crisis in Venezuela is the socioeconomic and political crisis that Venezuela has experienced from the government of Hugo Chávez and that extended over the years until the current presidency of Nicolás Maduro. It is the worst economic crisis in the history of Venezuela. Despite the complexity of the situation, it is possible.
Exposing the weaknesses suffered by society will allow us to adequately face the resulting disasters in Venezuela, especially with regard to the political, economic and humanitarian aspects of the crisis.To begin the investigation of the causes of the crisis, it is important to explain the information of political background about the reign of Hugo Chávez, and how their objective of raising the poor demolishing the rich finally created a bubble that would soon explode. Although at the beginning he was praised by the poor, finally his corrupt form of government negatively influenced Venezuelan society.
After unsuccessful a coup d’etat and then participate in the renewal of the Government of Rafael Caldera, Hugo Chávez came to power in winning a presidential election in 1998. I have campaigned to give power to the people and end government corruption. Traditional political parties that Venezuela had ruled during the last quarter of a century. He won the elections by a convincing margin, beginning his presidency with the support of the people and a barrel of Venezuelan oil for more than one hundred US dollars. The initial popularity that I have had allowed him to achieve many of his objectives that in other circumstances would have been very difficult to carry out.
In 2012, Guaicaipuro Lameda, a member of the intimate circle of the former Venezuelan president, made public the details of a radical plan that Chavez and his supporters intended to carry: the Bolivarian Revolution. With this plan, Chávez tried to establish democratic socialism in Venezuela. However, to do so, Chávez needed to take control of all branches of power: the Executive, the Legislative, the Judicial and the Military. Once in power, Chávez replaced the existing congress with a new National Assembly, which he controlled. I used its new National Assembly to rewrite the Constitution, particularly to help its own purposes. Before Chávez, the presidential mandates made a duration of five years, and the former presidents could run again only after two other mandates had left the position. Under Chávez, the National Assembly changed it to terms of six years, with unlimited reelections, and extended these new parameters to many other officials.
Chávez was president for 14 years, until his death in 2013. However, Venezuela still suffers from many of the negative effects it had on government and society.The National Assembly of Chávez also radically reformed the Supreme Court. They affirmed that the existing judges were corrupt and replaced them with the followers of Chávez. Chávez propagated the aura of an enlightened world leader, capitalizing on trade agreements with other countries to gain support. For example, I have closed a deal with Cuba that provided them with oil with great discounts in exchange for Cuban doctors. Another radical change was the federalization of almost all private faculties. In its war against the private sector, I have nationalized thousands of companies and private industries, seeking to ensure some false notions of equal rights and faculties and aspirations.
In general, Chávez left Venezuela in a vulnerable state that managed to survive under his energetic and enthusiastic government. However, his heir was not able to have the same power and, therefore, the country collapsed.The next point to consider is the transition from Chávez’s power to Nicolás Maduro after Chávez’s death. Despite a change of government, the hope of the people that Chávez’s tyrannical socialism was finally replaced by a more benevolent government was finally crushed under Maduro’s reign.
