Name Professor Title Date The Tragedy of Macbeth Power refers to authority and influence. People can do whatever possible to capture power. When given an opportunity to lead, people becomes corrupt because of greed, desire for safety and authority. An influential person can obtain anything by conning, stealing, bribing and lying, thus becoming a powerful opponent. Such people cannot allow anybody who appears to be an obstacle in their way. In “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” the play shows how Macbeth gets corrupt when he rises to the throne. Macbeth an example of how people change in a way that is inexplicable once they rise to power. Therefore power always corrupts. Macbeth is a man who seems unable to commit murder. He is a person who appears to have a conscience. However, despite his doubts on murder, He is manipulated by Lady Macbeth to kill. Lady Macbeth convinces Macbeth that the crime will be successful. Macbeth says “If we should fail?” Lady Macbeth replies “…screw your courage to the sticking place. And we will not fail” (Lukeman 68). Lady Macbeth gives Macbeth the plan and assures him by saying “When in swinish sleep, their drenched natures lie as in death. What cannot you and I perform upon the unguarded Duncan? What not put upon his spongy officers who shall bear the guilt of our great quell?”(Lukeman 78). Though Macbeth’s instinct at first could tell him not to commit murder, he eventually gives in to his wife. Macbeth commits the offense and keeps on killing more people so as to secure his authority.
