The Technological Revolution of the 21st Century through the eyes of Edmundo Gutierrez

Introduction

Edmundo Gutierrez is seventy -four years old and throughout his life he has seen the world of ways that would never have imagined. He grew up in Tabio, a municipality on the outskirts of Bogotá, reading any book to get. And he learned English transcribing each word from a novel to Spanish with a dictionary, a task that took more than half of a year.

Today, more than six decades later, see how people around them can learn any language in the world with just a cell phone and five minutes every day. And now you can get almost any book on the face of the Earth with an application and the minimum effort. I met him to talk about the technological boom of the 21st century.

Developing

When I was a child, most houses in Colombia still did not have access to electricity, it was very expensive and had not yet reached many parts of the world. The devices did not change much until the arrival of the Internet and many new devices between 1980 and 90. Before the biggest changes were color television, phones and the first laptops. And with the arrival of the 21st century a new world of devices appears. Before there was a big change every five years and now, thousands of things come to the market every year.

What has impacted you most about today’s technology? The rapid one that is replacing day -to -day functions. I am impressed by my smartphone. And how much it has been integrated into everyone’s lives. Now it is a fundamental element in work, in education. It is even a tool that helps me save time when handling. I can know in real time where the trancones are.

A little at the beginning. The newest generations handle it naturally because it is already something that comes out naturally, they have had almost all their lives. But those of us who are older we fight with them. It is an incredible, but strange concept for us. So we are clumsy with them. But I can proudly say that it is getting easier for me. I can’t say the same about many of my friends. Despite my difficulties, they seem much more practical. It is a good system. But it will always be weird to stop using buttons.

conclusion

Finally, what do you think about the use of technology? I think it’s fantastic. It makes life easier and closer in some aspects. Like social media, for example, we now have narrower connections with our loved ones in other parts of the world. And I love that. But I think we should not forget to connect with the people we have close. Today’s technology is a kind of miracle that makes us advance as a society at unimaginable speeds. But it also makes us dependent.

If we are not careful, we will not be able to make simple sums in the head. And we will not have opinions without first asking Google. I don’t think technology gets controlled, because it is we who program it. We have to take care of ourselves not to depend on our cell phones, it is important to forget about these and read a physical book or disconnect completely to connect with nature and others from time to time.
