The Republic of Costa Rica is one of the oldest democracies in Central America. Costa Rica is a country proud of its cultural heritage, social development on military spending and tolerance on hostility. The Spaniards called the country ‘Costa Rica’ because they hoped to find gold and other valuable natural minerals, not finding them, they had to devote themselves to agriculture. For almost three centuries, Spain administered the region as part of the general captaincy of Guatemala through a military governor. In 1821, Costa Rica joined the other Central American provinces in a joint declaration of independence from Spain.

Costa Rica has made its contributions to world music. His native popular music can still be heard in all peoples throughout the country and is often accompanied by typical or traditional dances. This genre nourishes many different origins to create what we hear today. The natives had been making music in the area for thousands of years and had developed their instruments and scales. When the Spaniards arrived, they brought their musical traditions and introduced several new instruments, while the posterior immigrants from European countries also contributed to the mixture. The final influence that helped develop the sound of Costa Rican music comes from the African population and this affected the particular entry rhythms.
