The no -different differences in the boy from the striped pajamas

The story is told from the point of view of a 9 -year -old German child named Bruno. Bruno is the privileged son of a Nazi commander during World War II. One day Bruno arrives at school an afternoon to discover his packed and placed belongings near the door. His family is preparing to move from Berlin to a place where his father will be in charge of the Auschwitz prisoner field. Bruno is not happy with the movement, especially when leaving his best friends behind. He is quite alone and does not understand why he can’t play with the children he can see from his window in the field, all dressed in the same striped pajamas. Then he realizes that not all are children, but also men of all ages, all with the same striped pajamas.

Bruno goes out to explore and then meets a child of his age named Shmuel. Shmuel uses striped pajamas and lives on the other side of the gate. Shmuel and Bruno begin to meet every day. Bruno is delighted to have a friend of the same age, but never completely understands why Shmuel cannot play at home or why Bruno cannot play with the other children in striped pamination. Shmuel tells Bruno that he can’t find his father and is worried. Bruno promises to help Shmuel look for his father and for that, Shmuel promises to give Bruno a pajamas to look like the field. Then, Bruno takes off his clothes, puts on his pajamas and goes next to Shmuel’s gate. While the children look for Shmuel’s father, the soldiers gather the prisoners, Bruno among them, and all go to the gas cameras where they find their unexpected death.

In the movie there are a couple of main themes that are seen throughout history. The main theme is the desire for friendship. The theme of friendship is explored by making Bruno walk through the camp’s gate and meet another boy of his age. The problem is that this child, Shmuel, is imprisoned. He is a Jew who is admitted to Auschwitz together with his family. Children become friends from opposite sides of the fence and war. The desire for friendship of these two children is so strong that they ignore the fence that separates them. They become very dependent on each other although this friendship will eventually lead to their deaths.

Another issue that has to do with ethics is prejudice. When Bruno’s father asks how he knows about people in pajamas, Bruno tells him that he has seen them from his window. Bruno’s father prohibits Bruno from approaching the gate and tells him to play near the house. Bruno does not understand his father’s hatred towards these people. In addition, we see his violent hatred of the Jews when he hits a prisoner who works at home. The actions of the Nazi soldiers and Bruno’s father demonstrate the theme of prejudice that extends throughout the film.

The issue of innocence is very evident in the protagonist, Bruno. Due to the negligence and little intentional information on his parents, Bruno has no idea of Auschwitz’s true nature, and even refers to prison clothes such as pajamas. Shmuel has obviously lost his illusion of child innocence and finds incredible relief when he sees him in Bruno. The film assigns a dark meaning to the madness of this innocence, since it eventually causes Bruno’s death.

In conclusion, the message of this film is that we are all more similar than different, we are the same. The friendship of the Jewish child Shmuel and the son of the Nazis Bruno, together with the holocaust, highlights the fact that divisions between people are absurd. This film also comments on people’s ability to rationalize evil actions committed against other people. Bruno’s family normalizes his own participation in the Nazi regime, are responsible for innumerable deaths, but they only feel the true atrocity of gas cameras when they kill their own son
