The legalization of drugs and drug trafficking in our time

Drug trafficking represents one of the most serious scourges of our time. Drugs kill thousands of people every year and Latin America is a region known for its illicit drug market. Colombia that was, in the past, a country associated with coffee is now synonymous with cocaine. This situation and the bad image that Colombia reflects abroad opened the way to a proposal contrary to the current policy of the country. Thus was born the proposal to legalize drugs. Of course, opinions differ in this possibility, however many people support the initiative and think that, if legalization occurred, it would be an efficient way to reduce drug addiction rates in the country. Therefore, this project aims to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of this legalization measure. I will start this analysis with the advantages of drug legalization and end the obstacles to the implementation of this measure.

First, drugs should be legalized for multiple reasons. First of all, drug prohibition is destructive. If we take the example of the 1920 alcohol prohibition in the United States, it has been clear that restrictive policies to prevent individuals who consume illegal products is a failure. In the same way, drug prohibition led to a wave of mass crime. Colombia’s policy has been focused on drug eradication for many years, however consumers or markets have been reduced. This war spends about 100.000 million dollars every year and does not seem to have positive repercussions on the country’s situation. Another argument is that legal traffic could eliminate intermediation and is a significant element. Indeed, people who deliver drugs illegally are the main cause of violence because they are part of bands related to many murders and corruption. Colombian President José Manuel Santos is convinced that the war on drugs that have been last for more than 40 years. According to him, the country should reinvent this war against drugs, removing the prohibition to rationalize and control it more effectively. In addition, drug prohibition animates minors to consume. The fact that the sale of illegal substances is not controlled, makes it easier to acquire drugs before most young people. For example, alcohol vendors who want to keep their licenses must respect the law. But drug traffickers don’t feel worried about that rule. They just need to find customers who have money to pay. Finally, Senator Barreras explains that many families are distressed because they think that, with one project, their children will consume more drugs. On the other hand, the senator argues that although alcohol is legal, adolescents are not alcoholic. Thus, although there are many reasons to think that drug legalization could solve the drug trafficking problem in Colombia, it seems that this measure can be dangerous.

On the other hand, we should question the possibility of establishing this measure. A first obstacle to this project is the United States, the world’s first drug consumer. The country firmly opposes this idea because it thinks that it would imply a legalization of all substances in its own territory. However, according to Francis Thoumi, director of the United Nations World Drug Report, if I really wanted, Colombia could implement this measure. But the real problem lies in the expansion of the drug market abroad. The domestic market is not important compared to the amount of exports. Thus, if the legalization occurred, it could generate anything but international instability and would not solve problems within the country. The expert added that the real problem lies in the internal problems of the country and that legalizing drugs does not attack the focus of the problem. Think that the government should set their attention on unresolved social problems. It evokes the fight against illicit crops and says that the government’s ruling is related to the failure of agricultural policies. Also, legalize drugs implies violating several international treaties. Columbia could suffer political and economic sanctions as was the case of Uruguay. Many American banks implemented in Uruguay, closed customer accounts who had legal cannabis companies because they would be breaking with anti -drug laws in their country. For Francis Thoumi, it seems possible that legalization is the cause of an increase in drug use. Thoumi is feared that the private sector uses marketing strategies to sell more drugs if consumption is allowed.

To conclude, Columbia has arrived a fight against drugs for years. Faced with the finding that the provisions adopted were inefficient, the government plans to legalize drugs. More and more people seem to support this initiative. They think that legalizing drugs would allow better control and aims to hold citizens responsible for their own events. People in favor of this measure maintain that the prohibition brought nothing more than excessive drug consumption and the loss of millions of dollars. However, the consequences of such a policy remain uncertain. The consequences could be very negative worldwide. In addition, there is always the risk that this measure has the opposite effect to the expected and thus increase consumption. Despite these uncertainties, I am convinced that this idea could take the country to victory against a problem that has roots in the history of Colombia. Thus I think that the measure of regulation and flexibility of drugs could be the solution to the drug problem in Columbia.
