The godfather: Reflection of the reality of the Sicilian mafia

´The godfather´, original work written by Mario Puzo, introduces us to Vito Corleone;Patriarch of the most powerful family within organized crime in New York. Sometimes called Don or Godfather, to his own request for those who needed a favor from Corleone. He never made promises that he could not fulfill, nor did the social status or richness of the petitioner matter, he only put a requirement: that the person offered his friendship. As a way to recognize that Don Vito was indebted, he could ask for payment in his favor, any service he needed.

Throughout the film, it is easy to perceive that the central motive for which the characters act, is the relative. In fact, what Don Corleone seeks to guarantee is the well -being of his family, in part, moving them away from business, and the respect of others towards him. Don Vito Corleone procreated 4 children with his wife Carmella: Sonny, Fredo, Michael and Connie. There are also two characters who adhere to the plot, Tom and Carlo. Tom Hagen, is the family lawyer and advisor to Don Vito; And Carlo, Connie’s husband.

How did the mafia business work? The bosses were skilled and extremely professional people. In the film, Vito is shown as someone who established values and norms that regulated the relationship between the members. Some rules were: business issues would never be treated at the table, at eating;Acts of violence would not be committed that harm the other families, and when the boss, Vito, is negotiating, they will not be able to interrupt, just listen.

Later in the plot, sob, or also called the Turk, ask for an interview with Don Corleone. Once already gathered, the drug business presents Don Vito, but he rejects it, saying that: ‘The drug business is not good’. This fact causes a war between families to begin. After this, and in response to his prior negative to enter the business, Vito suffers an attack and is sent to the hospital, so Sonny takes care of family affairs with the help of Tom.

Michael attends a meeting will. Michael achieves his goal, and then sent to Sicily, by Sonny, to free him from criminal charges. Once Michael is in Sicily, he meets a young woman named Apolonia Vitelli, with whom he marries a few months after his arrival. On the other hand, Sonny is ambushed in a shooting, by order of the Barzini, when he was in search of his brother -in -law, Carlo, for having repeatedly mistreated his sister Connie. This whole plan was orchestrated by the Barzini, supported by the tattaglia, and with Carlo as a traitor of the corleone.

After this event, and with Don Vito back home, they decide to gather the 5 families to agree on peace, and thus bring back to Michael. Michael, then, is notified of his brother’s death, so he decides to return to America; But he suffers a betrayal from Fabrizio, a bodyguard who was at his service, resulting in that in the death of Apollonia. This is an event that totally changes Michael’s character. When he returns from Sicily, he partially assumes family control, designating his father as his consigliere, and Tom, like his lawyer in Las Vegas. This succession is demonstrated with the following appointment said by Vito: ´Ahora Michael is the head of the family, ask for their permission, they will have my blessing … be your friends.´

The film then shows us the scene that, according to criticism, makes it the best played work on a big screen: the conversation between Vito and Michael. Vito talks with his son about the next steps to take to continue with the family, giving her specific instructions on how he would realize a possible traitor, with the intention of killing him. Thus, he also expresses that he had other plans for him, that this was not the life he wanted for Michael. Vito Corleone dies of cardiac arrest, doing this that Michael becomes the new head of the Corleone family. At the Vito funeral, the instructions that had previously given Michael are fulfilled. This scene shows the clairvoyance of Don Vito, in which his ability to think, and understand, with ingenuity and acuity was demonstrated.

Later, two simultaneous scenes appear: the baptism of Connie’s son and the deaths of the other four chiefs of mafia, which is carried out neatly and professionally, making it the climax scene of the film. It also orders Moe Greene to kill, to take possession of the casino in Las Vegas. Michael manages to consolidate the Corleone family again, making it the most powerful of all, and thus assuming her new role of Don Corleone.

The godfather has served as a reference within literature focused on family businesses, even leading to real gangsters, to want. The vision of the Italian mafia has changed. He provided information such as the importance of the company-family supporting external agents with business experience, to achieve greater growth of their businesses. It is, without a doubt, a cult film, which marked a before and after about what was understood as mafia, and also how a family dedicated to this lifestyle worked.
