The complexity of the Sonatas

Introduction

In 1993, Rauscher and collaborators found that the performance in intelligence tests improves whenever it is significantly heard when the Sonata K448 of Mozart (Rauscher, Shaw, & Ky) is previously heard). In a later study, the researchers themselves managed to replicate their findings with the same Sonata, but not with music by Phillip Glass (Rauscher).

Developing

Since minimalist music (Phillip Glass) is characterized by a lower degree of complexity of having less information (less notes and chords) than classical music (Mozart), the authors propose that this property is the complexity of the work that average that averageThe optimization of certain cognitive skills. However, an objective measure of said property is not proposed.

In the field of empirical aesthetics, the degree of complexity has been of great interest to last dates (Reber, Schwarz, & Winkielman). It is believed that complexity in visual works of art, could determine the taste of them, so that individuals prefer works of art that "retain" the intellect to easily understandable works of art (Belke, Leder, & Carbon).

Many authors agree that the complex nature of any phenomenon can be characterized by a distribution of the power law (Power Law Distribution) (Casti, J. L.;Karlqvist). This distribution appears in phenomena that have hierarchical organization by blocks, transmission of multiescale communication and appearance of emerging properties dependent on the specific configuration of its components (Flores-Valdés).

In 2009, Martínez-Mekler and collaborators characterized the distribution of the elements of different complex phenomena in nature;among them certain works of visual and musical art (Martínez-Mekler), thus proposing an objective measure of complexity in the artistic field. If, as Rauscher suggests, it is the complexity of the work of art music that manages to modulate cognitive functions.

It should also be supposed that complex visual stimuli could modulate these functions in the same way. This work explored a stochastic model of image generation, trying to find an invariant scalar relationship, as it appears in the distributions of the power law. The findings indicate that our model is susceptible to improvements to find this relationship.

So other models must be analyzed in order to check if the Mozart effect occurs when observing, and not simply listening, works of art. Since the two main dimensions of a painting, or images, on the one hand, the configuration of its elements and, on the other, the chromatic dimension, the second part of this study tried to show that the complexity (contained in said configuration).

conclusion

It is completely responsible for cognitive modulation that results in aesthetic judgment. To do this, the modulation of the vector elements of the HSV color space in paintings belonging to the modern period was explored. The findings show, surprisingly, that brilliance is responsible for perceiving an interesting and complex painting.
