The Augusta Masters: one of the biggest golf tournaments
Beginnings of Augusta Masters
This is one of the most important tournaments of the golf calendar, and the first one held in the year. Augusta’s masters develops in the United States at the end of April. We must thank this tournament for Bobby Jones, a renowned golfer from the first years of the last century. This American who considered sport as pleasure and that is why he was never professional, wanted to build a golf course to have fun behind his retirement. Together with Clifford Roberts (one of the future presidents of the club) he found in 1931 a land in Augusta, Georgia, perfect for his location. Those lands had been an indigo plantation and then a nursery. That same year the design work began;Augusta National Golf Club was founded in January 1933.
The first tournament was called Augusta National Invitational Tournament and was played in March 1934 in an 18 holes field with a 72. Horton Smith was the first winner with a record of 284 blows. The owner of the land, Bobby Jones, ended 13 °.
In 1939 the tournament was called The Masters Tournament, something that still remains in our day, as well as the route disposal, which was established in 1935. Club members requested the United States Golf Association (USGA) to house a U.S. Open in Augusta, but the association denied its request indicating that Georgia is a very hot place during the summer to organize one of its prestigious tournaments there.
How to play augusta masters
This masters has a typical system in golf, known as Stroke Play. The 72 blows in 18 holes is held four times in Cautro days. The tournament follows the Usga rules and has other rules of the club.
Since the Augusta National Golf Club is small in relation to other fields, groups of three players in the 36 -hole Rpimers must be formed, that is, the first two days of competition (usually Thursday and Friday). The winner of Augusta’s masters takes, in addition to the cash prize, a green jacket as a badge. This began to be implemented since the 1949 edition and the first to wear it was Sam Snead. That season the winner can take the green jacket home and use it in other tournaments, but for the next edition of the Masters it has to return it.
Tradition also indicates that the winner of the previous edition imposes the jacket to the new winner. When a golfer wins for two consecutive years (he spent three occasions: Jack Nicklaus in 1966, Nick Faldo in 1990 and Tiger Woods in 2002) The person in charge of giving the jacket is the president of Augusta National Golf Club.
The Trophy of Teachers and a Gold Medal is also given to the winner since 1961. From the 1993 edition, a trophy replica is delivered (and the original is in the club). As for the Palmares of Augusta Masters, 59 different players have taken the prize (and the jacket since its implementation), of which 36 were from the United States. The rest: South Africa, Germany, Spain, England, Wales, Fiyi, Canada, Argentina and Australia.
The golfer with more titles in the Masters of Augusta is Jack Nicklaus, who beat six times: 1963, 1965, 1966, 1972, 1975 and 1986. Second is Tiger Woods with five (1997, 2001, 2002, 2005 and 2019) and in third place Arnold Palmer with four (1958, 1960, 1962 and 1964). Some interesting records of Augusta’s masters: the youngest winner was Tiger Woods in 1997, with 21 years and the longest Jack Nicklaus in 1986 with 46 years. Gary Player was the one who participated more times, 52 in total and Sam Snead who scored the greatest number of blows to win a tournament (289).
As with the rest of the Golf Majors, winning the Augusta Masters gives the player the possibility of directly accessing the other three of the calendar (PGA in May, US Open in June and British open in July) for five consecutive yearsAnd a life invitation to play Augusta. In addition, he enters the PGA Tour and The Players for five years.
