The atomic bomb at the beginning of World War II in 1939

Introduction

The atomic bomb at the beginning of World War II in 1939, the atomic bomb had not yet been invented. However, scientists discovered at that time that a powerful explosion could be possible by dividing an atom. This type of bomb could destroy large cities with a single explosion and change the war forever. The fungus cloud over Nagasaki, Japan of the atomic bomb Source: US Government. UU.

Developing

Albert Einstein

Albert Einstein proposed many of the theories that helped scientists make the atomic bomb. When he realized that such a bomb could be manufactured, he was scared of what could happen if Hitler and Germany learned to make the pump first. He wrote a letter to US president Franklin Roosevelt telling him about the atomic bomb. As a result, Roosevelt created the Manhattan project.

Manhattan project

The Manhattan project was the name of the Atomic Pump Research and Development Program. It started little by little, but as the bomb became more real, the United States added scientists and funds to ensure that they were the first to have the bomb. Ironically, many of the scientists involved in the manufacture of the bomb had deserted from Germany. At the end of the project, the financing had reached $ 2 billion and there were around 200,000 people working on the project.

The first atomic bomb

On July 16, 1945, the first atomic bomb exploded in New Mexico’s desert. The explosion was massive and the equivalent of 18.000 tons of TNT. The scientists calculated that the temperature in the center of the explosion was three times higher than in the center of the sun. Although scientists were happy to have successfully made the bomb, they were also sad and fearful. This bomb would change the world and could cause mass destruction and death. When President Harry Truman learned about the bomb’s success, he wrote: We have discovered the most terrible bomb in the world’s history. Decide to launch the bomb for when the first atomic bomb was manufactured, Germany had already surrendered and World War II in Europe was over. Japan was also defeated, but did not give up. The United States was contemplating an invasion of Japan. Army leaders estimated that between 500.000 and 1 million American soldiers and allies would die in an invasion. President Truman decided to launch the atomic bomb in his place.

Hiroshima

On August 6, 1945, an atomic bomb called Little Boy on Hiroshima, Japan, was launched. The explosion was huge, the city was destroyed and tens of thousands of people died. The bomb was launched by a plane called Enola Gay, piloted by Colonel Paul Tibbetts. The pump itself had more than 10 feet and weighed around 10,000 pounds. A small parachute was on the pump to stop its fall and allow the plane to fly away from the explosion zone. The small child’s atomic bomb Source: National Archives

Nagasaki

Despite witnessing the terrible destruction of the bomb in Hiroshima, Emperor Hirohito and Japan still refused to surrender. Three days later, on August 9, 1945, another atomic bomb, nicknamed fat man, was thrown over Nagasaki, Japan. Once again, devastation was horrible. Rendary six days after the bombing of Nagasaki, Emperor Hirohito and Japan surrendered to US forces. The emperor announced it by radio. It was the first time that most Japanese listened to their voice.

conclusion

The main scientist of the Manhattan project was J. Robert Oppenheimer. The father of the atomic bomb is often called. The first bomb launched on Hiroshima was made of uranium. The bomb launched on Nagasaki was made of plutonium, which was even more powerful than uranium. It is believed that at least 135.000 people died from the explosion of Hiroshima and another 70.000 in Nagasaki. Many of these people were civilians, including women and children. Hiroshima was chosen because it was a great port city with a military base. Nor had it been very damaged by previous bombardments. This would demonstrate how powerful the new weapon.
