Teaching motivation and commitment in students

Introduction

Motivation according to Naranjo: "It is the person’s ability to achieve their growth, their positive characteristics and the freedom to choose their destiny". Interest can be maintained, acquired or increased based on intrinsic and extrinsic elements. The teacher must consider a triple objective in his motivating function: to raise interest, direct and maintain the effort and achieve the preferred learning objective.

Developing

The teacher can have a greater or less degree of control over actions that influence students’ motivation. You have to raise good issues and problems to generate interest, it is more difficult to ask what to give answers. In addition, we must show the relevance of achieving the objectives and looking for different ways to initiate participation. It is not the same to impose that promoting participation in another way that seems more autonomous and that generates more interest.

As for the effort, it must be awarded, with both positive and negative rewards, as punished with positive or negative punishments. In this way we will encourage the behavior that the child has done or not repeat itself again. On the part of the teacher it is also very important that moral reinforcement be given value, that is, to praise, to repeat this behavior. Coll;Palacios and Marchesi.

According to a Rivera study, it is determined that “the student’s motivation positively affects the student’s performance, since it was checked in this study, the intrinsic and extrinsic motivation variables explain the 13.5% of the performance variable ", in addition to" the indicators that most affect intrinsic motivation in academic performance are self – esteem and self-realization of the student."

The commitment is a capacity that makes us aware of the value of a pact that we have made previously and our obligation to fulfill it. When we commit ourselves to something or someone, we get involved in it and comply with what we have committed. The commitment is a value that we must develop in children since childhood, since this gives them autonomy and responsibility when developing all the activities of their daily lives.

conclusion

When developing in the child the value of the commitment, we will be certain that they will fulfill any activity or task assigned inside and outside the school. This we can promote it through teaching them to strive or giving them small responsibilities. In turn, teachers must also have this characteristic, since the commitment within the classroom must be bidirectional, that is, they must always go hand in hand with both parents and teachers.
