Student Movement in 1968 in Mexico

The student movement that was dated in the year of 1968 was a social movement, in which only students of the UNAM and the IPN participated but also teachers joined this movement, as well as the mothers of Loe Students, workers and some professionalsFrom Mexico City. This movement was repressed by the Mexican government through the Tlatelolco slaughter that occurred on October 2, 1968 in the Plaza de las Tres Culturas. This was committed against a peaceful demonstration by the Mexican Army and the Paramilitary Group Battalion Olimpia set by the Mexican government against the National Council of Strike, guideline of the movement of the movement. The start date of this conflict was on July 22 which began with a fight between students of vocational 2 and the particular high school Isaac Ochoterena, in the citadel, which revealed the rivalry between the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN), and the high schools incorporated into the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).

It is important to mention that this event had a greater impact because at this time many journalists from all over the world had arrived in our country since the Olympic Games where Mexico was the headquarters were. These games would begin on October 12, so that the Government of Mexico was interested that the image of our country out of peace and cordiality, since the entire Mexican political system reached amazing extremes managing to control all information media very well very wellAnd communicative, the government’s purpose was to appear that nothing bad was happening and the 68th Olympics promoted much more, next to be held in Mexico and that would be inaugurated on October 12 (day of the discovery of America). While the city was illuminated by large posters that the Olympic rings showed hundreds of students were arrested, they took their freedom, they imprisoned them, beat and unfortunately much of these were killed or simply disappeared without knowing more about them.

For these dates, another manifestation of students that commemorated the Cuban Revolution, with those of the National Federation of Technical Students (FNET), which protested by police intervention during the fight between students of vocational 2 and high school students and the high school students also began. The demonstration was aborted by the police, so the students took the high schools of some 1, 2 and 3 of the UNAM, as a manifestation of protest to the clashes between grenadiers and students, the police and the army surrounded school schools ofThe National High School and IPN, especially in the center of the city where they destroyed a colonial door of high school 1, some students who were present were injured and there were also a large number of detainees, some schools from the National Preparatory Schoolwere taken by public forces.

The movements and demonstrations were diverse throughout months where students fought for their rights, but it was not until the afternoon of October 2 a day after the departure of the Army of the UNAM and IPN campus, thousands of students studentsAnd workers, many of them with their wives and children, gathered in the Plaza de las Tres Culturas in Tlatelolco. In this demonstration, the Olympia battalion was infiltrated, which were dressed in civilians with a white glove in the left hand, who went to the ‘Chihuahua’ building where the speakers of the movement and several journalists were, but when the leaders of the student movement communicatedAttendees to disperse peacefully and without falling into provocations, the white glove men made the speakers throw themselves to the ground, approximately 6:20 p.m., When helicopters watched the crowd from the air, it is then that Bengal lights appeared as a sign for the snipers of the Olimpia battalion stationed in the ‘Chihuahua’ building opened fire against the protesters and military who took the placeThat precise moment began the shooting, the latter was a strategy of this paramilitary group created by the Mexican government to infiltrate and detain the protesters and make believe that the students were the aggressors.

The military in their attempt to defend repelled ‘the aggression of the students’, but given the confusion, the shots were not directed against their aggressors, but towards the multitude of protesters who were in the Plaza de Tlatelolco, shortly a mass ofbodies covered the entire surface of the square. Many protesters escaped from the shooting, hiding in some departments of the surrounding buildings, but the army did not stop, breaking each of the departments of all the buildings of what the Tlatelolco unit forms without a court order to capture the protesters, theMasacre did not stop and continued during the night, the soldiers invaded the apartment buildings that were near the square. Many witnesses of the facts ensure that the bodies were taken in garbage trucks, the media around the world published the news that the bloodiest clash had been recorded between the students and troops of the government. This event summarizes that what caused the massacre of students of October 2, 1968, was the intolerance of the government of Gustavo Díaz Ordaz before the demonstrations, which were usually carried out by the students who were dissatisfied by the form of governmentThat he was governing Mexico in those years, also, for the intolerance towards the requests of these movements, such as: true democracy, better living conditions, justice and equality for all, as well as freedom of expression.

After a long investigation, I reflect a lot about the issue, it is concluded that it is importantImpotence is that these students had the right of a better education and there was no reason for the government to infiltrate and make this happen. Although it was an event that will always live in the history of Mexico today I thank those people who started a transformation in our country and now we can say that everything good that happens in the educational system will be thanks to them, it is important to continuetelling this story to the next generations but even more important is always bringing these innocent students in our memory and heart.
