Sonata: protagonist of music

Introduction

The Spanish Ayre Group, led by the Clavecinist, Organist and Orchestra Director Eduardo López Banzo, presents his latest record work dedicated to the Sonatas to Trio Op.2 of Georg Friedrich Händel, only three years after the recording of the OP.5, and thus completing the group of the Haëndelian Sonatas published in London. As we get used to, Eduardo López Banzo has managed to elaborate a personal version of the Sonatas.

Developing

Following some interpretive criteria based on the historicist current. Throughout his life, Händel composed 20 sonatas to trio, 12 of which were published in London in two different collections: 6 sonatas were published in 1733 as Op. 2 And another 7, in 1739 as OP.5. In many of his works, as is already well known, we find multiple appointments or reused melodic patterns of their own compositions.

This is the case of these Sonatas, plagued with references to their theatrical music or instrumental fragments, such as Agrippina, as Pants de Hart, or in the Obertura de Esther, in which we can perfectly hear melodies very similar to the walking of the sonata op.2 n.º 3. It is an album of great sound quality and careful balance between instruments. The violins, played by Alexis Aguado and Kepa Artetxe.

They are the protagonists of the recording and stand out for their bright, intense sound with a strong dramatic contribution. In the foreground, their sweet and very expressive melodies are heard (eg. Yo. Long, Sonata N.º 1), at the same time as more agile and virtuous passages where their great technical qualities are observed as interpreters (eg. II. Allegro, Sonata N.º 2). The development of the continuous bass is the Clavecinista and Director of the whole, Eduardo López Banzo.

We are faced with a brilliant interpretive work by López Banzo, which is present through continuous ornamentations, scales and light arpeggios that enhance drama and perfectly accompany the melodies of the violins. This great sound of the key, reached throughout the album, can be heard more clearly in the cadence of the Larghetto of the Sonata N.º 3, when Eduardo López Banzo goes to the foreground and closes the sonata.

On the other hand, the violonchelist Guillermo Turina and the bassist Xisco Aguiló either unnoticed. In large part of the album they bend, obtaining perfect synchrony and tuning, in addition to great technical quality by both. The work of the whole team is, without a doubt, outstanding, according to the international dimension of the group, which already won the National Music Award in 2004.

conclusion

The Church of San Sebastián de Cercedilla (Madrid), where the Sonatas are recorded, provides the album for an excellent sound and atmosphere that manages to go back to the first half of the 18th century. The great quality of the recording, together with the interpretation of the musicians and the splendid work of direction by López Banzo, make this work an essential album for baroque music lovers.
