Social Psychology and Human Behavior

Introduction

The psychological bases of the consultation are the ones that allow us to know more thoroughly the way in which the human being acts.

Regardless of the differences or similarities that exists between the great behaviors of human beings, the reality is that being interacting with other people plays an important role in our lives, since those that usually surround us are often the source of ourmain forms of behavior, that is, they influence our way of being and behave. It is for that reason that a large part of the time interact with others, trying to understand them and share some aspects in common, tastes, characteristics, etc.

Social psychology

It is difficult to determine what is the correct definition to describe what social psychology is, so I can say that it is a discipline that is responsible for studying the behavior of the human being in various aspects.

‘Social psychology is the most difficult discipline to explain, in which people try to understand, explain and predict how the actions presented by individuals are influenced by the thoughts, feelings and actions perceived, imagined or implicit, of other individuals’. Raven and Rubin, (1983).

In a nutshell, it can be said that social psychology is determined by the study given by people trained to find a way of understanding or understanding each of the behaviors that the human being has by interacting with others.

While for Baron and Byrne (1994), they define social psychology as ‘the scientific field that treats to understand the factors and causes of behavior, and thought of individuals in social situations’.

What social psychology represents for Baron and Byrne is that it is a field of study that tries to find a way to understand each of the different elements that determine the behavior of an individual.

Social psychology is a quite difficult discipline to determine, so accepting some definition of the many what is there is not so simple, it is so, the definitions presented are the most accepted to explain what social psychology is.

It can be said that social psychology aims to understand the causes or factors that create our thoughts, feelings and behaviors in social situations. Social psychology covers many factors of the human being, so it is really difficult to determine, but each of the contributions given by the study of several psychologists are those that have allowed us to understand a little more about the way of actingof the human being.

The limitation of study of social problems is imprecise, so it is necessarya. In this way, these disciplines can work together but their object of study has gaps that distinguish them, you can and should know how they see the subject from different perspective, but at the same time, from all facets and conglomerate that is the human being.

Definition of attitudes

The term of attitude is usually associated as a mental and neutral state of disposition, organized through experience, which exerts a direct or dynamic influence on the individual’s reaction to all the factors and circumstances that surround it.

The attitude of the individual is determined by their behavior towards social conditions, generating a predisposition to perform and react.

Social psychologists consider and believe that attitudes are learned and, for this reason, discussions in the area of social psychology, focus on the process through which attitudes are acquired, in other words, attitudes are acquired in situationsof interaction with individuals, or simply by observing the behavior of others.

For his part, Sabini, J., (1992) states that attitudes would have three main functions:

  1. They are central elements in the definition and maintenance of groups,
  2. They help establish their own identity or conception of itself,
  3. They guide thought and behavior ".

This means that the study of attitudes allows us to know the mainly important ones that are for each of the ways of acting by the human being.

According to Sabini, J., (1992), “Because attitudes can be considered as much as social entities and cognitive entities, and that they link individual cognition with social participation, it is not surprising that for many social psychologists the understanding of attitudes – howThey form and how they work- It is the central problem of social psychology ‘

This means that attitudes are usually very decisive for an individual by socializing with a group of people, so the study of attitudes is of great importance.

Attitudes tend to remain stable despite external factors (such as a group or an organization), which seek to change them, this is considered as resistance to persuasion.

As can be seen in the previous paragraphs, attitudes have traditionally been defined as involving beliefs, feelings and dispositions to act. However, there is currently a growing consensus among social psychologists in the sense of conceiving attitudes such as evaluations, evaluations that relate complex ways with beliefs, feelings and actions.

Attitudes formation

Among the aspects that help the development or formation of attitudes, it is estimated to be:

  1. Unilateral information: we can avoid inconsistencies interacting mostly with people who share our opinions or, in the case of new people, making our initial impression prevail in future interactions with them (in this regard, the reader may remember the so -called primacy effect, seenon the issue of social perception).
  2. Information weighting: people do not give equal weight to each portion of available information when they form attitudes. Instead, they focus more on those aspects that appear as especially important, significant, or outgoing. In this way, on some occasions the main role can play the cognitive aspects, but in other instances they can acquire more relevance affective factors or information about past or usual behavior.
  3. Information accessibility: the information that is more accessible, that which comes more easily to mind or that captures our attention more, can determine an attitudinal judgment. Here the reader can remember the role of accessibility of cognitive representations in social perception, especially the pre -activation phenomenon (or priming). That information that is more accessible, because it is perceptively outgoing, also tends to exert a powerful effect on attitudinal judgments. This can be illustrated by the simple fact that the preference for certain favorite foods is probably more related to its obvious sensory attraction, than with its hidden nutritional benefits.

Once an attitude is formed, which summarizes the relevant information about an object, such an attitude becomes part of our cognitive representation of that object, like any other piece of information. In addition, if the attitude is repeatedly activated (either because the object frequently faces, or because the attitude towards the object is frequently thought), the link becomes narrower and more intense, so that the attitude automatically comes to themind every time we think about the object or interact with it.

Therefore, the attitude becomes a substitute for what we know and how we feel about the attitudinal object, and for example, if someone asks us what we think about an artist, our attitude can be ‘like’ or’I don’t like it’, without having to think about the cognitions, feelings and behaviors that initially generated our reaction.

This type of research is very interesting, because it indicates that even stimuli that we cannot recognize or identify can however sometimes influence our attitudes, through a conditioning that involves associations that occur totally outside our conscious knowledge.

“Therefore, to the extent that these recent evidences are confirmed by additional research, we could have to accept that at least some of our attitudes, and at least to some degree, are influenced by inherited provisions of our parents, to theequal as many aspects of our physical appearance or our basic personality dimensions ”. Bar, e., (1998).

It can be said that being in constant interaction with a group of people helps us to give rise to or stimulate a little more attitudes.

In this way I finish the realization of this work, in which I resorted in the search for diverse information to have a complementary idea of the subject.

Conclusions

It could be said that social psychology is the discipline that is responsible for studying the behavior of the human being both individual and group, among the aspects that stand out for study are attitudes, culture, roles, groups, norms, norms, between many more.

The study of every aspect of human behavior allows social psychologists a more extensive knowledge of the behavior of the human being.

The study of these aspects usually changes too much when comparing the ideas of each author, and what can be said what their study is not entirely exact.

The social problems, which have been increasing, make more and more basic knowledge about how psychological processes are given in human relationships; It has become a profitable and necessary area to correct and prevent, but above all to understand how the human being works in a mutual relationship with other human beings, why it is grouped and under what conditions of behavior.
