Social networks and food disorders

Social networks are a social group or structure composed of people, organizations and/or entities, where they are linked to establish all kinds of communication, whether informative, entertainment among many others. These have many advantages, since they provide communication, approach to people, knowledge, but they also have many disadvantages among them the generation of food disorders in adolescents. (Lugli and Vivas, 2001) "Food disorders are alterations of the behaviors that are in relation to the intake leading is to a bad end, due to the fact wanting to control the weight and silhouette" this tends to put the health of a person or in the worst case cause death (p. 4). New technologies are greatly influencing the creation of stereotypes, un controlled web pages and promotion of sedentary lifestyle, thus generating an increase in the population that presents these different disorders, specifically food. Currently, these networks have become an influential factor in the appearance of food disorders in adolescents, so they should be regulated.

In the first place, social networks create stereotypes of people with false ideals that motivate adolescents to want to reach them many problems such as food disorders. According to Sánchez, Beatriz Lozano (2012), adolescents are more vulnerable to opinions and the need for acceptance, they can be negatively influenced by internet information related to artists, models and actresses that lead them to fall into food disorders such as anorexia and bulimia. (p. 302-306). The desire to fit into a society and be approved by others generates a negative image about the body itself and a constant yearning for wanting to change it, making modifications in the diet that in the future generate consequences in the health of adolescents. Many disorders originate from stereotypes and comments made by people from the same environment towards the affected one, as with anorexia nervosa, as Bruch states, 1971 “it is common for this alteration to begin by receiving some criticism direct or indirect in relation to your weight ". Currently, the Internet opens the door for these criticisms to increase and that these disorders are presented to a greater extent seeking to fulfill the ideas of "ideal figure" and "perfect body" that are presented in this medium.

Second, websites provide without restriction has contained that promote food disorders as life forms. Around the world countless people publish any kind of material in all networks, including publications that incite the practice of nothing healthy food behaviors. “In a search engine like Google there are about 500.000 pages pro anorexia and pro bulimia in less than a second ”(Sánchez, Zelmira Beatriz Lozano, 2012). It is that easy as any teenager can obtain all the necessary information to take the first step and fall into one of these disorders thanks to the non -limitation of information presented in these sites. There are easily accessible portals that encourage food disorders between adolescents and young people (Méndez A. CARLOS E., 1995, p. 308) Generally promoting weight loss or the practice of star diets with few foods and no nutrients that after all end up affecting the health of young people.

Finally, sedentary lifestyle is one of the main consequences of the use of social networks and is also one of the main causes of eating disorders. According to a study of professionals and students from the Technology Area of the Federal Institute of CEARA Education, Science and Technology (IFCE), IFCE, from the Leão Sampaio (Fal) school and the Faculty of Juazeiro do Norte (FJN) in Brazil, 60 % of respondents attribute to these technologies a negative influence on the performance of activity relativizing that there is currently a greater concern with the use of these modern tools than with their own health (Consultor, 2013). Thus turning adolescents and future generations in sedentaries and chaining them in this way to be more prone to the appearance of food disorders. According to an investigation by Hernández-Alcántara et al (2013) sedentary adolescents are more likely to eat at excessive and restrict this one to a greater extent than adolescents who performed some physical activity. In this way the sedentary lifestyle by networks is a direct route to the appearance of different food disorders.

In conclusion, the use of social networks must be regulated and thus reduce their influence on the appearance of food disorders in adolescents. Parents should reduce the use of networks in young social networks. It should also make a better use of web pages, since its bad implementation can become very harmful to the minds of teenagers, since they pose all kinds of content that encourages to perform diets and activities that lead to the generation of food disorders. A good solution for this problem can be the control of parents about the type of content that their children observe, a control over the material that is published on different websites and find a way to promote physical activity in adolescents.
