Simón Bolivar and the importance of an oath

This people have given everything for the cause of humanity: corrupted mesalins, agripins without entrails, great historians, distinguished naturalists, illustrious warriors, raptor proconscies, unbridled sibarites, aquilated virtues and rude crimes;But for the emancipation of the spirit, for the removal of concerns, for the exalting of man and for the definitive perfectibility of his reason, well, if not saying nothing.

The civilization that has blown from the East, has shown here all its phases, have seen all its elements;More in solving the great problem of man in freedom, it seems that the matter has been unknown and that the clearance of that mysterious unknown should not be verified except in the new world.

I swear in front of you;I swear for the god of my parents;I swear for them;I swear for my honor, and I swear for my homeland, that I will not give rest to my arm, or rest to my soul, until there are the chains that oppress us by the will of the Spanish power!

Since ancient times, man has come to oath. We could also say that man is the only being of nature capable of carrying out the action of swearing.

The manifestation of the oath contains a promise, through which a series of facts are declared, whose truth or mandatory seeks to be supported through the invocation of something or someone, that the person who swears considers. The oath can also fall on the denial of a thing or on the promise of doing something. The oath has within its main characteristics: being a public act and having a solemn character. It cannot be denied that some decisive oaths for humanity may have been carried out in secret, but for the purposes of this conference we will concentrate only on the public oath.

As for the tradition of going to the oath as a way of being forced to fulfill a promise or obligation, we find that both Greeks and Romans swore for all their gods, as well as by the gods that were imported, of the different peoples and cultures that weresubjected to his empire, in each of his conquests.

Subsequently, at the time of the Roman Empire, history would also know, the obligation acquired by the Roman citizens to swear submission to their emperors, who began to worsas a form of flattery. This tradition of realization of public oaths would also be taken by the Christian monarchs, who made an oath when receiving it investiture of their supreme dignity. Through the use of the oath, it was sought to offer a guarantee of fulfilling their political duties with respect to its people. In the same way, it was up to the subjects in public assemblies, to express their oath as a sign of guarantee of fidelity to the monarch.

But this story about the public importance and solemnity of the oath has not yet fensioned, since it survives to this day, occupying a prominent place within the legal field, where we find that the oath is divided into assertory and promising. These in turn are subdivided into simple or solemn, judicial or extrajudicial

As for the assertory or affirmative oath, we find that in this "the truth of some past or present fact is affirmed or denied". In the case of the promising oath we have that this refers to the commission of future facts, provided that these are possible. The oath that has been taken into consideration, this time, was prepared and pronounced by a 22 -year -old, on a summer afternoon of the year of 1805. We imagine that this young man, gave a slow sigh that seemed to prolong in time, until he enroll in the depths of the history of a continent still subjected to the chains of the Spanish Empire. His few companions perhaps anoded by the vigorous expression of this indomitable young man, heard attentive the words offered to the wind of Mount Sacro;Historic and great that moment when the young man asked: what is this is the people of Romulo and Numa, of the Gracos and the Horacios, of Augustus and of Nero, of César and of Gross, of Tiberius and of Trajan? Bolívar dreams, projects, performs. From our opinion Bolívar proclaims here the fundamental syllogism in the history of every man: to dream, project, they are premises. Action is the consequence. Without her, Bolivar’s life would have been an unfinished reasoning. It was not so. He was a full man. He crowned the syllogism proclaimed in his youth, the basic syllogism and guide in which we must inspire us the young. A syllogism that makes men and peoples great. Dream, project and perform.

Never before an oath was so important for the history of an entire continent. No one has questioned this episode of the oath, which was in fact confirmed by Bolívar himself in a letter of 1824, where he remembered his teacher that promise: «Do you remember when we went together to Mount Sacro in Rome to swear about thatHoly Land The Freedom of the Homeland? Certainly you will not have forgotten that day of eternal glory for us »

What has been questioned through history is the exact content of the pronounced words, pronounced in that final oath. For example, the Colombian philosopher Fernando González in his book Mi Simón Bolívar said: “That vulgarity that they call speech or oath in Rome is not from Bolívar, but of Dr. Manuelito Uribe, who had it from Simón Rodríguez, who built it whenI was already a pussy. Bolívar said on Mount Sacro: «I swear, Rodríguez, that I will free America from Spanish domain and that I will not leave one of those carajos there. That was all ”(González, 1930, p.82).

At the time of making his oath with Bolívar, his friends Simón Rodríguez were, who was then 36 years old and Fernando Rodríguez del Toro, 32 years old.
