"1984" is a dystopian novel that takes place in 1984. In the novel, the world is divided into three powers: Oceania, Eurasia and "Eastasia", and the three are at constant war. The story takes place in London, capital of Oceania.
Oceania is a state dominated by the only political party, "Ingsoc", whose boss is the "Big Brother", representative of the party doctrine. It has never been seen in person and people are under their surveillance 24 hours a day. He is represented in the streets by the posters that say "the Big Brother watches you".
The State Administration is divided into: The Ministry of Truth, which manipulates the media according to the doctrine;the Ministry of Peace is responsible for war;the Ministry of Abundance, in charge of finance;and the Ministry of Love, which is responsible for maintaining the law. The company, in turn, is divided into two blocks: the members of the party, which are also divided into the internal dome of the party and the ministries officials, and the proles, considered uncultured and free.
The company is monitored by the telepallas that capture images and the most silent sounds, which are transmitted to the thought police. These reinforce people who do not comply with the regime and unconditional love towards the older brother. One of the weapons to manipulate the population is the "newspeak", which is in constant creation and update. It is a simplified version of the language and its objective is to reduce lexical wealth until certain terms disappear and not have freedom of thought not approved by doctrine.
Our protagonist, Winston Smith, works at the Ministry of Truth, is responsible for rewriting the story by manipulating ancient media so that there are no party failures, in addition to eliminating or editing documents that go against Big Brother.
Winston, after years under the regime, questions the system and decides to be revealed in secret. Buy a notebook in which you write your thoughts. That leads him to contact "The Brotherhood", whose leader, Emmanuel Goldstein, has allegedly written a book, "The Book", which threatens the Oceania regime. That way Julia, another official of the Ministry of Truth, who also has thoughts contrary to the system. With her she shares ideals and starts a love relationship in secret.
Within the government, O’Brien, Winston’s partner, is the only person of his liking, so he decides to trust him. Winston thinks that it is part of the group contrary to the government. Julia and he met O’Brien and confess that they are part of the movement against the government. Days later, the two are discovered and deceived by O’Brien, real author of "The Book". Winston is imprisoned and Goldstein and "the brotherhood" are a cunning to identify criminals.
They take Winston to the Ministry of Love, to Room 101, where after suffering torture and vexations, their will is defeated and assumes confidence for the party. O’Brien gets Julia and her love for her. Thus Winston is considered trained to be returned to society.
A time later Winston and Julia meet again, but given Winston’s love for the "Big Brother", they have nothing to say to each other apart from confessing their mutual betrayal.
George Orwell wrote the novel between 1947 and 1948 and was published in 1949. It was the latest novel published by the British author before his death in 1950. Orwell’s work can be interpreted as the reflection of the writer’s evolution.
Orwell did not live in a peaceful era. He lived from World War I, going through the Spanish Civil War until World War II. After his childhood and adolescence contemplating the classism of British society, Orwell moved to Burma, province of India under the administration of the British empire.

His experiences marked his work, which, in addition to 1984, it is worth highlighting the novel "Rebellion in La Granja" (1945) and the essay "Politics and the English Language" (1946), given that it addresses issues that resumed in 1984, such as theDivision of social classes, totalitarianism, the political manipulation of the message and freedom.
From his biography and literary production it can be deduced that 1984, against what he usually believes, it is not a criticism of consumerism, but to the totalitarian regimes that Orwell knew firsthand. All this had an impact on his latest novel.
