Poem Literary Analysis: Rima XLI

Introduction.

The author of this fragment is Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer, who was born in the middle of the LXX century, and belonged to the era of romanticism. Born in Seville, after being orphaned to lose his mother and his father, he educated his godmother who involved the love for books. Throughout his life he had several sentimental relationships and a not very good marriage, these experiences will be reflected in his jobs. One of his most famous works was the book of sparrows, it is a set of poems and this fragment belongs to him.

Developing.

Romanticism was late in Spain and that is why it did not have as much impact as in other countries, they presented a more intimate poetic self and now the writer worries more about feelings, of emotion. You can see two subjects, where there is a tendency to incompatible love, they wanted to be together, but I can’t be. Sentimentalism also stands out, as dramatizes everything and what is the dynamic nature, such as the hurricane.

The one that highlights above the others is the incompatibility between two subjects who love each other, but for some reason they cannot be together, what love and disappointment has, repeat the same phrase three times. It could not be! The main theme is, the incompatibility of two people and what love entails. You can see how the two are in love and trying in all possible ways to be together, but they did not get it.

The brief summary is that you cannot give that union between them two and they will have to have a life each by their side. If we talk about the external structure we can clearly see that it is divided into three stanzes with four verses in each. The measure is (10,10+1 A, 11, 4+1a), decasyllable verses, endecasyllables and pentasyllables are combined. It has an assonant rhyme in the peers and has greater and lesser art.

On the internal structure, the first two stanzas can be divided into two parts, we can see that it refers to the Hurricane nature ”and“ ocean ”, which is a main characteristic of romanticism and as it shows the incompatibility of the two people. And in the last stanza he says how he can’t see more and shows that everyone is going to do his life on his own.

We can divide the form into three different levels, the first is the phonic level. As I mentioned before, it combines endecasyllable verses, decasyllables and pentasyllables. What highlights are the exclamations that at the end of all the stanzas “could not be!”, The rest of the phrases are enunciative, but with a certain subjective tone, which could be interpreted as expressive the narrow path, inevitable the clash.

On the morphosyntactic level, we can see that the main verbs are to fold me, crash almost all refer to the poet, except "accustomed" that refers to the two. It also makes use of qualifying adjectives to give more emphasis high tower, beautiful you, I haughty. To go to the beloved use the pronoun you, but the person who has the most prominence the poet, followed by the beloved.

At the semantic lexical level, at the beginning of the fragment we can see several metaphors, which replaces the AMDA by nature you are the hurricane. We can observe a parallel in the first two stanzas, there is also alliteration in the third and seventh verses in which the "R" is repeated. An allegory could be interpreted in the first and second stanza with the love disappointment.

conclusion.

In conclusion, we can say that it is an intimate poem, that there is a break between the poet and his beloved. The conflict we see from the poet’s point of view and as he tells what he has lived and how he has interpreted it.
