Physiotherapy schools in Spain until today

In Spain, physiotherapy, initially it was a fairly disfigured profession. The first indications of this acquire form, although with a minimum expression, on September 9, 1857, in the form of public instruction law. Among the functions of the first physiotherapists was: to bandage and make dressings, application of priests, apply bloody, vaccination, perform ears drilling, or dentist work. These functions were expressed according to the Royal Order of June 26, 1860, which were also expressed in the Regulation for the Teaching of Midrons and Practices in 1861.

In article 49 (r.EITHER. November 21, 1861) it was specified that the title of practitioner was only authorized to exercise the simply mechanical and more subordinate part of surgery. This training and functions such lacking the conceptual profile of a physiotherapist, do not place us at the origin of the use of physical agents, but to the same root that the professional institute that would give rise to physiotherapists was developed.

In 1953 the teachings of nurses, practitioners and midwives were unified, creating the new title of Health Technical Assistant (ATS). Due to the need for specialties of health technical assistants to appear, the specialty of physiotherapy appeared, the denomination of “Physiotherapy Assistant” being official, for the decree of July 26, 1957. This was done based on the high number of patients by qualified health personnel.

Before physiotherapy in Spain is considered as a science with a professional use of discipline, the preventive and curative use of physical agents was subject to various chairs, being the cathedral of rehabilitation, radiology, or physical therapy;although it was also used by schools and gymnastics teachers.

From the aforementioned chairs mentioned above, the first professors in charge of training physiotherapists appear, who at that time were nicknamed as physiotherapy assistants.

The first 10 physiotherapy schools were all dependent on all of a medical school, which were:

  • SCHOOL OF SALUS SALUS INFIRMORUM HEALTH ASSISTANTS OF MADRID. Of order 7-2-1958.

The first physiotherapists that formed from these schools mostly used to perform care functions in hospitals. These had in possession a nursing square that compatible with other functions derived from the new physiotherapy services. Some came to have private clinics.

Until 1969 the functions of physiotherapists were reduced to the aforementioned, since in this year the group of physiotherapy assistants mobilized in creating the Spanish Association of Physiotherapists, getting that on April 19, 1969 it is approved by the departmentof internal policy.
