Pandora’s box

Introduction

Pandora’s name comes from two Greek words: bread that means everything and Dora that means gifts because all the inhabitants of the Olympus gave him a gift. Pandora in Greek mythology is the first woman on earth, she was created because Prometheus, a titan that had a certain relationship with mortals, angered Zeus who is the father of all the gods, for having cheated him, since PrometheusHe decided to steal the divine fire to give it to mortals and that human beings had benefits. As punishment, Zeus sent the creation of a woman who would cause certain evils about human beings.

Developing

Zeus commissioned the creation of Pandora to Hefesto, the God of Fire, who decided to create it from the mixture of water and earth, forming a beautiful young woman. Pandora came to life thanks to the performance of the four winds. Pandora received attributes belonging to all the gods, Athena who is the goddess of war, wisdom and justice decided to dress her with silver garments, adorned her with precious jewels and a golden crown in addition to teaching her qualities such as sewing and knitting;Aphrodite, the goddess of beauty, granted her the ability to seduce, the graces (charm, beauty and nature) and Peito, the goddess who personified the seduction and the charm of her endowed her with more jewels.

The hours and stations endowed with a crown of flowers that appeared at the spring and, Hermes station, the god of commerce, gave him cunning and deception. What Pandora stands out is that it is described how a beautiful woman with characteristics similar to mortals with some character that will cause problems, this gift was granted by Zeus. As Pandora’s iconography is scarce, we only find certain images in Athens from the S.Goes.C As the work of Sophocles called Pandora where we find the woman presenting themselves to the gods, but from later dates, specifically in the Renaissance.

There is a comparison between Eva that appears in the Christian religion (which is the first woman) and Pandora from Greek mythology, causing works such as Eva Prima Pandora de J.Cousin found in the Louvre Museum where a naked woman is shown with elements such as the skull implying icons related to the protagonist. We also find other images of Pandora, which normally recognize this woman, since it always appears with a jug that alludes to the pandora myth with the box or the bottle and sometimes the confusion between psyche and pandora is reached, since, Psyche also opened a box that belonged to Persephone.

In the s. XVII and mid -nineteenth, works appear that show Pandora’s myth, finding numerous representations throughout these two centuries. In summary, we can classify the representation according to the material where it is performed, that is, in the Greek ceramics of red figures, Pandora appears as a woman that contains a kind of box full of jewels or we also find representations in which theOlimpo gods providing her with the characteristics previously named, in sculpture we can highlight that Pandora appears as a woman with great curves suggesting that she is a beautiful woman.

On one side the jug appears referring to the myth and, later in time, Pandora will follow a key figure that will be represented throughout the times. In ancient times, after the creation of Pandora, women should wear clothing that covered their anatomy. Pandora’s myth appears in theogony, as a bad personified and jobs and the days is where myth appears specifically, written by Hesiod. In theogony the creation of the world is narrated, hence the myth of Pandora appears and, in works and days the myths of Prometheus and Pandora are narrated.

As for the myth, there are many versions, one of the most widespread is the following: Zeus ordered Hermesthat her brother rejected her because she feared that Zeus planned a revenge against him. Prometheus told his brother that he should not accept any gift from the gods. Epimeteo hid a jug that contained all the misfortunes that would fall on the human beings that no one could open it, since it would cause a big problem for Prometheus and mortals, therefore, epimeteo forbade Pandora to open that jug.

One day, Pandora decided to open the jug, since, the gods in addition to giving it with advantages endowed her with qualities like curiosity. This action caused all evils such as old age, madness, resentment or passion to come out, which extended by all mortals, before this happened, mortals had lived on earth without problems, without diseases through happy livesand decent. Pandora before this, he decided to close the jug thanks to Zeus’s help managed to close it leaving the Elpis inside (La Esperanza). Pandora, to try to solve this, decided to endow mortals with what remained in the bottle, that is, with hope.

Epimeteo when this occurred, he understood the warning of his brother causing that, he also caused the misfortunes to occur before the human race. Pandora is Pirra’s mother while the father is an epimete, Pirra is the first woman who was born on earth through a natural process. When this happened, the women obtained a misfortune causing them to be inferior throughout the history of Greece. There is a problem in the writings of Hesiod where the myth tells, the origin of the jug where all these ills were, in other writings, the jug appears as a jar.

As for the myth, we find several versions, in some it is explained that the God who wanted all this to be Zeus hinting that it was Zeus who gave Pandora’s box, other versions say that Pandora obtained as wedding gift the box containAll evils and, another version is in which it is explained that hope was trapped in the box, but how did he get out of the box? In addition, there are attitudes of Pandora that appear in the Eve of the Christian religion, as I have already named, there is similarity between these women, but in the book of Genesis, we find descriptions about Eva that has similarities with Pandora. We also find Lilith in Jewish mythology.

conclusion

In Greek mythology we find another Pandora who is the daughter of Erecteo, the king of Athens, and with Praxitea, the goddess of action causing him to have as sisters as protegenia, procris, creusa, oritía, ctonia and Otionia. In this part of mythology, we find Pandora as the goddess of the earth or gea also appears as a vote of chastity shown in it as in their sisters. In this myth, what happens is a battle between the king of Athens and Eleusis where Ion got the battle for the Athenians, but Zeus, discontent with the end of the battle decided to destroy Erecteo as well as his daughters, Pandora, Protecteniaor procris who offered his life in exchange for his father’s victory.
