Overpopulation and its implications
Introduction
This essay shows the problem of overpopulation, which according to the Royal Spanish Academy is the “excess of individuals of a species or a set of species in a given space, that is, a phenomenon that seriously affects the world, inwhere the excessive amount of people in a certain place, causes catastrophic consequences.
“If you compare the number of people today with those in the past, the difference is very large. For example, during the rise time of the Roman Empire, the population of the world was able to ascend more than 100 million people. It was in the 1820s when the world reached 1,000 million. In 1970 the figure reached 3,000 million, and 4 decades were enough to exceed 6,000 million. However, throughout history there have been different times, in which he has declined or shot. Great pandemics such as the bubonic plague, contributed to reducing the number of inhabitants, although only for a while ”(Geoencyclopedia).
Therefore, mention is also made of what are the causes that originate this problem, the consequences and possible solutions to control the phenomenon, with the purpose of raising awareness of the damage that is being caused in many aspects, because as they say colloquially:"We don’t fit".
Developing
An anonymous author in sustainability for all, mentions that “less than 800 million people populated the land in the mid -18th century. Today, we are more than 7.500 million people and we will continue to grow ”. This drastic growth has produced largely due to the increase in the number of people who survive until they reach the reproductive age and has been accompanied by great changes in fertility rates, which has increased urbanization processes and migratory movements. These trends will have important repercussions for coming generations, the United Nations mentions.
The factors that cause this problem are: cultural aspects, since, in religious families, they reject the use of contraceptive methods, Menéndez and Cabrera in 2008 mention that “in our communities the Catholic and Protestant religion prevails, but, there is also theown beliefs of the region. There are currently 50% both Catholics and Protestants according to the census worked annually, the churches every day participate more around the theme of reproductive health. Churches leaders argue that families must have the number of children who want, as the Bible says "fructify and multiply", so their parishioners have some respect and opt for natural methods such as breastfeeding. Another factor is the decrease in the mortality rate, since “the industrial revolution brought with it the revolution in the world of medicine. Thus, when the number of annual deaths descended and the birth of births, the population increases ”, that is, thanks to medical and scientific advances, the cure has been found to diseases that were previously mortal such as smallpox, which was responsiblebetween 300 to 500 million deaths only during the twentieth century, among others. Food production has also contributed to the improvement in population health.
However, following this, the consequences that overpopulation brings are catastrophic, in recent years it has increased the emission of greenhouse gases, therefore, an agreement has been reached to combat climate change with the agreementFrom Paris, which seeks to “maintain the increase in world temperature in this century well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre -industrial levels, and continue efforts to further limit the increase in temperature to 1.5 degreesCelsius ". Likewise, pollution has increased in recent years, due to the amount of solid waste caused by each individual, according to the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) cited in the Excelsior newspaper, it mentions that “each inhabitant generates 1.2 kilograms a day, that is, 438 kilograms a year ”, this means that approximately a year 3,285,,000 kilograms of garbage are generated worldwide, which most arrive in the oceans for bad habits. On the other hand, other consequences are vehicular traffic, the personnel of the road subdirection said that in recent months it increased up to 80 percent, due to migrants and visitors from other entities that lie in overpopulated places, the increase inUnemployment is another consequences, since overpopulation causes “a high supply of workers for a limited demand for jobs. This, in turn, can cause an increase in crime and social revolts "," the excessive consumption of natural resources, as well as the growth of energy production from coal, oil and natural gas (fossil fuels)”It is another of the consequences that is having a negative impact on the planet.
conclusion
Mazzini, a. (2015) mentions that Malthus’s theory, written in his book essay on the principle of the population, argues that natural resources will decrease while the human population is increasing, therefore, this would cause a moment in which thepoverty and lack of food would end the human race. Therefore, I consider that we are still in time to do something with the phenomenon of overpopulation and stop the consequences that this will cause in the long term.
Among the preventive plans to avoid this phenomenon is not inhabiting overpopulated places. In Mexico there are states with little population such as Baja California Sur, Colima and Campeche, since we know that people from the south migrate to northern states such as Nuevo León looking for new employment opportunities, however, as mentioned above, excess people ina certain place causes unemployment and in extreme cases criminality. While worldwide there are countries with few inhabitants such as the Vatican City in Rome with 800 inhabitants, Tuvalu in Polynesia with 10,000 inhabitants, Nauru with 11,000 inhabitants and Palaos with 18,000 inhabitants, both in Micronesia, San Marino in Europe with 33000 inhabitants, etc.
There is also family planning, which aims to prevent pregnancy risks and control the chronology of pregnancies, as well as birth control, as its name says, it seeks to prevent pregnancy in women and adolescents.
