Otelo’s work, Otelo El Moro de Venice

Chronological situation

To start we must chronologically place the work of Otelo. Otelo: The Moor of Venice (original title: The Tragedy of Othello) is a theatrical work of William Shakespeare written around 1603. The first representation of which you have news was held on November 1, 1604 at the London Whitehall Palace. Otelo is a tragedy. Otelo’s structure is divided into five acts divided into scenes: in the first act there are three scenes, in the second act it also has three scenes, the third act has four scenes, act four has three scenes and finally the act five that has the last two scenes of this work.

The main character is in spite of his Mora ethnicity. This was unusual in English literature in the time of Shakespeare, which presented the Moors and other peoples as villains. In this work Shakespeare avoids any discussion regarding Islam religion that considered bad at the time. Otelo has stood out for his great deepening in rhetoric and tragedy.

Characters

One of the most important aspects of this work are the characters as evolving and how they are related to them, so we will know them:

  • Otelo: Otelo is the first black man who stars in a work in Western literature, and still one of the most famous. The work dramatizes the fall of the hero since Otelo begins as a noble man (he is a respected war hero, an adorable husband and an eloquent accountant of stories) but at the end of the work, Otelo becomes a crazy, irrational and violent husband , jealous of his wife, whom he kills after Yago convinces him that DESDEMONA has been unfaithful. On the other hand, being a Moorish black and a foreigner subjugates him to racism, especially by his father’s father, who believes that the interracial marriage of DESDÉMONA can only be the result of the Otelo Pillerias.
  • DESDÉMONA: DESDEMONA IS A BEAUTIFUL WOMAN AND A WOMEN VENECIANA IS THE PRIDE AND JOY OF HIS FATHER. But she refuses to marry the wead and handsome Venetian with whom everyone expects her to marry. On the other hand she escapes with Otelo, a black man, greater than her and a stranger from Venetian society.   • Yago: Yago passes the entire novel conspiring against Otelo and Desdemona, and eventually convinces the first that the second is deceiving him, despite the fact that DESDEMONA has been completely faithful to Otelo. Yago’s capacity for cruelty seems to have no limits or motivation. All this seems enough to explain the incredible destruction he brings to the life of the people he better knows. Yago is known as the master of conspiracy and we will focus on him on the analysis.
  • Emilia: Emilia is older than Desdemona, develops a close relationship with her. Both have different marital lives since Emilia has a bitter of her due to her first marriage to Yago. The only problem that Emilia does not know towards DESDÉMONA is to steal her special handkerchief, which as we will observe in history has devastating consequences. The loss of that handkerchief convinces Otelo that Desdemon is unfaithful, and this small theft of Emilia ends up causing her friend’s death, in the last act.
  • Rodrigo: Rodrigo is a man with money but clumsy since he thinks he can buy the heart of desdemone with expensive gifts. He hires Yago to be his right hand, but he basically uses it as a source of money to carry out his plans. Yago steals the jewels that Rodrigo gives him to send to desdemona and sells them to get money. Rodrigo falls again and again in Yago’s weaves, which causes him to be killed in the back by his “great right hand” of his Yago.
  • BRABANCIO: He is Desdemona’s father and is a wealthy and important Venetian politician. Otelo is like a son for him and always invites him to his house, but he never thought he would "steal" his daughter. In addition, he never believed that his beloved and innocent daughter would marry Otelo unless she was drugged, coerced or under some spell.
  • Casio: Casio is one of Otelo’s soldiers a clear follower, and has recently been appointed as the second in command of the general. Ethical analysis

In this ethical analysis I will prioritize the character of Yago and how his weaves trigger the history, evolution and comparison of him with a much more current work called “Snow White and the 7 dwarfs” of 1937. Yago is a genius of evil, he enjoys making and ruining the lives of others, but always so that he demonstrates the elegance of his ingenuity with a particular scheme. He always stops to reflect on each evil and ingenious step he gives to tell us wonderful that his plan is.

Yago’s main reason is ambition, the greed that corrodes his soul. Yago can hurt Otelo for how much he knows him since he knows his strengths and weak points, one could say that for Yago, Otelo is his best enemy and friend and this takes me the phrase that looks most is the one he said Michael Corleone in the movie The Godfather II. ‘Keep your friends close, but even closer to your enemies’.

The problem with Yago is that we do not really know because he hates Otelo, it is true that he gives us several reasons such as Otelo overcame him in the military field, and his suspicions of a rather intimate relationship even infidelity with his wife Emilia. We could say that Yago is the personification of vice, thus, abstract. These types of characters are typical of medieval moralities, they tend to be tempting characters are often associated with the devil (for temptations).

Yago begins as a character who with an evil vacuum that through his ingenuity and malice manages Shadow until the end of the work in which he takes the initiative of his actions in order to culminate his great work, end Otelo. Yago is often our focus on this work. We follow his story more than Otelo’s and spend more time with him than with Otelo.

How we find the similarities of Yago and the Snow White. First of all, both are rejected in the first place since Yago is not chosen by Desdemona as the first marriage option as well as the Snow White Madrastra is the second option of the father (the king) before death in mysterious and sudden way of his wife (the Queen). Both have an Yago obsession to destroy Otelo and the stepmother being considered the most beautiful in the kingdom but Snow White gets in the way, so his objectives is to kill Snow White. Both use third parties to achieve this objective in the case of Yago USA Rodrigo, Desdemona, Casio and other characters, the stepmother uses everyone at their disposal to find Snow White and then hires a murderer to end her life, this Last forgive Snow White’s life since he is not able to kill her for the mission commented by the stepmother and let her escape. Yago not seeing victory results on Otelo decides to do evil and not leave his affairs in the hands of third parties and kill Rodrigo, this and other circumstances cause Otelo to hang Desdemone, but Emilia clarifies the situation and accuses Yago. Faced with this situation and to discover his error, he committed suicide since he has murdered his woman’s woman and has prioritized and confident more in the words of others than in his wife’s. The stepmother for her part to not let her intercede more in her plans to her is disguised as an old woman and poisons with an apple to Snow White making me die.

Finally Yago is arrested and tortured until death for the terrible crimes of him as well as the stepmother who is destroyed and imprisoned. Both characters have an ambition that controls them and makes them lose their judgment, both protagonists use third parties with intelligence to achieve their ends and both fail due to humanity and good faith of those third parties that have not been corrupted like them. conclusion

Otelo: The Moor of Venice is a work that taught citizens who could read one of the most important sins in Christianity, envy, and how it transforms you until you become a completely different person from what you are. I have chosen the work of Snow White as similarity since it is with this audiovisual work with which I learned as a child what would be the envy as far as beauty is concerned and how it is possible to extrapolate this envy to other areas of life.
