National identity of Mexico

Introduction

What do we understand by identity? His etymology defines him as what is equal to himself or similar to himself. I understand it as what, first of all, makes you what you are. So when we talk about national identity I can understand that reference is made to what, first of all, does what is to a nation, a people, a community or human community. And what is what we do to be what we are as a nation? Clearly the answer is society, cultural heritage, the way of being, of thinking, of speaking, of dressing, of capturing art, everything that derives from cultural forms.

Developing

In Mexico, we could say that our identity is defined by our population of mestizo race; or for our large territory; or for our privileged geopolitical situation; or by the language of Spanish that while retaining indigenous languages; or to the art recognized worldwide or a folklore with an enviable positioning.

It is really complex to understand the importance of the concept, it is very difficult to define it with precision. However, it is also clear that currently Mexican national identity is built by the need to differentiate ourselves as a unique country in current global culture. In a globalized world and so open to know about the cultures of other countries, it is necessary to have differentiators, that we rescue from events throughout history.

The identity of our country is given by the individual identity that later becomes collective, but all that identity is constructed of a historical-political situation. And to be able to talk about it I would like to resort to the definition of identity of De la Torre who says that “when talking about the identity of something, reference is made to processes that allow us to assume that one thing, at a certain time and context determined , it is itself and not another (relative equality with itself and difference- also relative- in relation to other significant ones), that its identification and inclusion is possible in categories and that has a continuity (also relative) in time ”.

In this sense I can say that identity is a set of values, indicators, actions, thoughts and feelings that form culture. National identity has its origin in how people behave, in their traditional manifestations, in history and everything that the nation represents. The historical moment in which Mexico is built as a nation arises as a product of a mixture of cultural diversity. From the vision of different anthropologists and historians, Mexican identity is controversial since it is defined even from colonial historical and indigenous past to the most current governments.

The pre -Hispanic past, the way of life and the mix with Spanish society in the colony were times where cultural and social relations were formed that gave rise to frustrations and disappointments of the Creoles and the indigenous people, who in the future fell to the ideas of the Mexican independency.

Brading mentions it in some of his documents he says that “his ambiguous treatment of the relationship between indigenous societies, carefully described and the colonial society that replaced them, would be for many years the Creole characteristic vision of the American past”. In definition, the construction of identity occurred since before Mexico became an independent nation, forging an identity was somewhat complex, since society was divided into identities found, on the one hand the beginnings of miscegenation, the new ways of life and introduction of the new religion.

One of the most transcendent elements in Mexico, something that lasts in the essence many Mexicans, there are historians who say that the hardest conquest beyond politics was the spiritual, since in a few years, millions of indigenous people were evangelized and learned arts , offices, ideas and custom that changed their worldview.

Thanks to the Spanish evangelizers who made a people implement their religion, the current Mexico fails in liberalism and modernity. We are a society that continues to have hundreds of temples still in force, along with their ideas and erroneous ways of seeing the world, there is the Virgin of Guadalupe as a crucial character of the real history of Mexico and its rooted cult, a purely western idea that It has been in force and expanding for five centuries.

There are even writers like Ignacio Manuel Altamirano who say that “the day the Virgin of Guadalupe is not worshiped on this land, surely not only the Mexican nation will have disappeared, until the memory of the inhabitants of the current Mexico,” thought That personally seems sad, although religion is not the important point of my essay, if it is important to define and mention it as one of many examples that are clear when defining ideas to understand how and with what elements went Building the notion of the Mexican, before the Mexican identity will be completely formed.

Another thing that came with the conquest was undoubted , defined language and culture, which can belong, but are not considered as such because since their origin in the pre -Hispanic world there were no defined state structures.

Ernest Gellner says that "Mesoamerican political organizations arise to justify the clash with the new organization that necessarily emerges from the conquest". And then when it tried to implement a state in the colony, tensions between ethnicities and the State were given, tensions that became deep oppositions.

These ideas triggered the independence movement in the town, with which Mexico managed to consolidate as an autonomous nation, and with it new symbols and meanings that were established, which last to this day, such as the flag, the anthem and the national shield. This is another example and proof that the movements against the government have marked Mexican identity, all begin with the integration of the people and the marginalized sectors in political decisions.

In fact, the history that defines Mexico as the country that is currently and more particularly the history of the nineteenth century, are times where conflicts such as the Mexican Revolution and other movements against the regime occurred, mostly conflicts and wars; some that sought to build a state that fights the established order and others to extend the mastery of the State.

Which in the end in both cases the purpose is power, they are struggles that influenced the construction of Mexican identity and all from the frustrations that are the result of the invasion and that refer to a symbolic network. In the end, if we reflect Mexico, it is defined by the constant fight of power, moving entire societies that believe in the idea that “the inhabitants of the country, with all their disparities, were united by similar ideals, shared a territory, had a common past and They venerated emblems and symbols that identify them as Mexicans ”and are able to fight for them.

They are able to fight for them. They are political struggles that influenced the construction of Mexican identity and all from the frustrations that are the result of the invasion and that refer to a symbolic framework. The Mexican identity is the engine of the independence and revolutionary movements of the people who persist in the conscience of the Mexican, even today. With these ideas throughout history, the political speeches of governments, specifically post -revolutionaries, try to rescue the participation of the people and it is something that continues to win the surveys with the different political parties. An identity is not entirely good, since due to that idea, today you can see how economies, politics and society in general do not progress; for the elites that manage them for the interests of power.

Mexico despite being a great economic power for its history is also a technocratic, economist, dehumanized and hypocritical Mexico, with a society that highlights the values of the spirit with religion, family and personal values with the wrong historical pride of having a glorious past , independent of the European, who fought the battle against colonies, bad governments and dictatorships.

I say erroneous because I believe that current Mexico has nothing of that sense of pride, so a country with serious problems, endemic poverty, shortcomings, galloping crime and undoubtedly third world. And I think that if we believe as Mexicans that our history defines an inspiring and excellent identity today we are wrong.

conclusion

Mexico is undoubtedly a cultural power, yes; And also an important presence in the world. And there is no doubt that within identity in Mexico there is unity. And it is undeniable that a common identity unifies us. Mexicanity, whatever, is not unitary but diverse. But if we must understand and change or at least question the history and identity that defines us, because despite the fact that it can be seen as strength that significantly enriches our culture, it is also our weakness and the cause of non -progress.

And this task falls to young people, who are carriers of cultural meanings that are part of the definition of Mexican identity. Our vision acquires importance to the extent that we transmit it, we are the one who can define a new identity in the political, economic and social sphere; and do it from our perspective. This essay should be a call to act and participate, resume and give new meaning to our culture; To change the future of the country and society. And perhaps, as the dynamics are, in the future Mexico solve the problems entrenched to the identity and history that "defines us".
