Loneliness;A romance about history and the nation

Soledad is an interesting love story because on the surface, it is a simple plot and love story, however, at a deeper level it can be seen as a romance of history and the nation. Like most romantic novels, it is a novel full of feeling. It tells the story retrospectively of love that seems to be destiny and manages to bloom at the end after a series of tribulations. All its characteristics are framed in the generic genre of romance, in terms of the ideal conventions of love within the content of your work. But also, the contrast within the characterization of the characters and their nature.

These aspects allow a loneliness reading in terms of a traditional sentimental romance where the handsome and brave hero achieves the ideal love of the beautiful protagonist. And although this simple interpretation is valid, it ignores the aspects of history and the nation that are evident within writing. In my opinion, that is why this story needs to be seen at a deeper level, considering the historical elements and collecting sentimentality to show that Miter’s writing is also a romance of history and the nation.

For the purpose of this national metaphor and symbol within history, the hero can be seen as a representative of the people and a new national movement, Enrique returns from the wars of independence as a winner. Loneliness is related to the nation, land and culture. You can see how the antagonist who seeks to appropriate the nation, as a representative of the past and the illegitimate power. In national romance, the hero’s mission is to rescue the ‘stolen’ nation and return it to its legitimate owners. The final marriage can be representative of the union between the people, the land and the culture, the process that allows the formation of a united nation. In the history of Soledad, the attributes that are seen as good include;Youth, nature, national, art and culture, sincerity and future. In opposition, negative aspects are seen as;old age, Spanish, tradition, deception and abode of the past. It is a direct dichotomous relationship between the new national and traditional opinions of the environment around the author of the time.

In addition, to add to this ‘vision of love’, Soledad can be seen as a representative of Latin American values, while Don Ricardo is a representation of traditional Spanish values. In a similar thought train, Eduardo and Enrique are perfect examples of the two great divisions of the Creoles, liberal is, liberal versus conservative. National romance traditionally expresses the ideals of a ruling class. However, in the Spanish -American interpretation of Miter, it is associated with the historical ideology of liberalism. Defines romance as a belief of a civilized nation in progress that is projected towards the future by denying the colonial system and leaving it in the past.

Finally, the few contradictions of the social context that Miter includes in the novel are resolved and gain coherence or harmony due to the symbolic transformation that comes with romance. History imposes an idealized vision of both love and homeland story. Therefore, although the plot and history are simple, they portray a much deeper level of nationalism and the belief of Miter in the vision of love nationwide. Through its history, it transforms the vision of love between people, into a cohesive vision of love within the nation that expels the previous ideals of colonialism.
