How to reduce gender violence
It is January 20, 2017, and Donald Trump has been officially sworn as President number 45 of the United States, announcing a new political era. Meanwhile, around 217 people are arrested due to their opposition to Trump’s discriminatory comments about women, undocumented immigrants and Muslims.
Interestingly, the next day approximately 5 million people participated in the march of women through the United States, with the purpose of defending women’s rights, the right to health, the right to quality public education,The equal rights of LGBT people, among other political situations that arose after the election of one of the most racist and macho presidents of modern times in the country of freedom. Similarly, 673 demonstrations at different times of the day, in 87 countries and territories of the five continents were carried out with reasons similar to the United States. Together, everyone exclaimed: “Women’s rights are human rights!". All but the island of charm, Puerto Rico.
Of course, it is not the fault of the island that the famous parties of San Sebastián street took place that day, making them no choice but to continue celebrating, perhaps ignorant of all the political tension happening just around the corner of the corner. It is surprising to see how in a country considered first worldwide, gender violence is evidence. Although perhaps the reason why this type of violence is the lack of education to respect, the fact that the island is a Christian country is another reason why the gender perspective in the country’s public schools should be implemented, regardlessAll Christian protests that this would cause. By recapitulating the thousands of history classes taught through primary and secondary school, each Puerto Rican knows that, together with the arrival of the Spaniards, Christianity arrived to the island, and with it, its precious and beloved Bible that, apparently, was written against women’s rights.
Most of the Bible’s teachings on women are based on the foundations established in Genesis. By disobeying God, he condemns Eva, which serves as a representation of the woman: “I will greatly multiply the pains in your pregnancy;With pain you will give birth to the children;And your desire will be for your husband, and your will will be subject to your husband."Yes, it is an old book that strongly reflects the ideologies and philosophies of the society of that time. Even so, there are hundreds of phrases throughout the book, against equity. If there really existed a God, wouldn’t you treat your humans equally instead of making a genre lower than the other? This is precisely the problem in Puerto Rico, a country where 97% of its residents are considered believers.
First, it is good to emphasize that gender violence is defined as any act of violence that is exercised to women, for the simple fact of being a woman. This discrimination is based on any tangible or symbolic attack that affects women’s freedom, dignity and safety, and serves to maintain the status of male domination. This definition is different, but still related, to that of domestic violence since the latter refers to violence produced within the home, such as from the husband to his wife or a mother to her children.
In order for women to overcome gender violence, it is advisable to seek psychological help in order to increase self – esteem and regain dignity and deserved respect. In 2015, according to the Puerto Rico Police, around 746 victims, 630 women and 116 men were counted between the ages of 14 and over 65 years. There were 747 offender people, around 620 men and 127 females of 16 years or more. These numbers are alarming since it shows that gender violence continues to increase more and more on the island and this is due to the lack of education regarding gender violence.
On the other hand, an implementation of the gender perspective in the public schools of Puerto Rico can be the best solution to these social problems through the island. The gender perspective is a way to achieve equality between genres. Here, it is stated that women and men are equal, with the same rights and capacities, this being one of the main objectives.
With the gender perspective, gender violence will be reduced because it would result from more social and economic opportunities, as well as human rights and social justice, for men and women. Although this sounds like a perfect solution to the problem of gender violence, on the island this idealism has caused tremendous controversy. These groups against the gender perspective argue that this teaching goes against their values as Christians, and that this would implement issues of sexual guidance and gender identities within the school, while groups in favor indicate that education with education withgender perspective and sex education are different issues.
In short, a curriculum with a gender perspective in the country’s public school will allow boys and girls to learn that both have the same rights and abilities, and that none is superior or lower only by sex with which it was born. When a child without a gender perspective is raised, he will see the lower woman and grow up, this being will become a macho man and mistreat the woman physical or psychologically, as men have done throughout history. Therefore, an education with a gender perspective is the only way to eradicate machismo and homophobia on the island, and thus lower gender violence numbers annually.
