The Gray Wolf: wild and indomitable predator
At some point, the amount of gray wolves distributed by the planet were really abundant. Inhabiting Eurasia, North America and the Middle East. Currently, this species is in danger of extinction due to hunting and constant destruction of its habitat. They usually live in mountains, meadows and forests. They have a great adaptation to all kinds of environment.
As for its physical appearance, the gray wolf has a thick fur in gray, as the name implies. Upon reaching adulthood, its weight is usually between 34 and 56 kilograms. The male is usually bigger than the female and can reach 80 kilograms. They usually appear to be bigger than they are really due to their fur.
Gray wolves live in herds and form complex social structures composed of alpha male, female and young. They all work as a unit. They communicate by marking odors, vocalizing (howling), with facial expressions and certain body postures. They are carnivorous animals, their diet is mainly composed of deer, alces, bison, rodents, beavers and hares, among other animals.
The Iberian Wolf: Carnivorous, iconic and prominent
It is known as Iberian wolf to a gray wolf subspecies that inhabits the plains and forests of Portugal and northwest of Spain. Powerful and of great cunning, adapts perfectly to a wide variety of environments.
Like the common or gray wolf, the Iberian is carnivorous. But it differentiates it from this species is that it has a lighter structure and white marks at the top of its lips. Its tail also has dark color marks as well as its front legs. It can be found in light gray, sepia and ocher, according to the time of the year. The male usually weighs about 50 kilograms and the females between 30 and 40 kilograms.
These are just some of the main characteristics of these two emblematic and imposing species of wolves. Both of them are today in danger of extinction.
