The report by IOM suggests that there is need for removal of these barriers to ensure that nurses are in a position to lead change and also properly-positioned to progress health. Most of the nurses are registered, and several millions of these nurses have doctorate or master’s degrees and are therefore considered as Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNS) since they have passed the national certification exams. The licensing and practice rules differ across the various states in the US. These regulations tend to define the activities that can be carried it by a professional nurse. Therefore, these regulation affects how nurse practitioners perform their jobs. Some states restrict nurses from seeing patients and therefore they are not allowed also to prescribe medications without the supervision from a physician. On the other hand, some states allow nurses to see patients as well as prescribe medications without the need for supervision from a physician. It is true to say that nurse practitioners perform tasks that they are allowed to do depending on the state laws that they work under and not based on their education and training. The IOM offers recommendations to ensure that this situation is changed.
