Femicides as a consequence of misogyny in the Dominican Republic

According to the RAE, a femicide is the murder of a woman at the hands of a man for machismo or misogyny. On the other hand, Dominican prosecutors only count as femicides those murders that occur in the environment that consider intimate in pairs, since feminicide does not appear as a crime in any law or in the Dominican Criminal Code. According to the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), in 2018 at least 3,529 women were victims of femicides in Latin America, occupying the Dominican Republic the sixth place with a rate of 1.9 women killed per 100,000 and an absolute number of 106 people.

Feminicides have a deep relationship with the socio -cultural environment where they occur, because contrary to what many believe, femicide is not a passion crime if not a product of machismo and misogyny that are part of society, the last link in a ladder of abuse in which several influence and that usually takes time to reach. A passion crime is one that is committed under an unpredictable disturbance of consciousness caused by feelings. The high femicide rate is a problem that cannot be solved with a law, an extensive system and processes are required to change certain aspects of Dominican popular culture and Latin America making calls for consciousness and logic.

You have to observe the type of environment where they occur on a larger scale to understand how their cultures connect with this atrocious crime for their common denominators. According to ECLAC 14 of the 25 countries with the highest femicide rates are Latin American and many others are countries in sub-development, this shows an inversely proportional relationship between education and violence (when one increases the other decreases). Another thing that these countries have in common is a very entrenched popular macho culture that in one way or another treat women as properties of men and this is supported by religion.

The predominant religion in the Dominican Republic and all of Latin America is Catholicism, an institution that has often shown having customs and macho foundations. Sexual abuse scandals have been denounced within the convents as well as innumerable cases of pedophilia by the Church leaders. Feminist religious groups have protested by how churches exclude women from decision -making although they frequently request their help to cook, order spaces and do similar tasks.

‘Because the husband is the head of the woman, just as Christ is the head of the Church, which is her body, and he is his savior.

So, since the Church is subject to Christ, so the married ones are to their husbands in everything.’(Ephesians 5: 22-24 Reina-Valera version 1960)

This verse is a sign that religions have a structured base of sexist violence. More than one written written suggests or orders the submission of women before the man and is part of the skeleton of misogyny which has been accepted and internalized by the same women and in places like the Middle East, where fundamentalism stands out, these these ‘Divine teachings’ are part of the laws by subjecting women to almost unimaginable levels of oppression for many of us. Returning to the Latin American context, many are the same women who defend the archaic positions of the church that subordinate them to their male spouses, accepting that it is the man who takes the reins of the house only for their status as a male, although the woman has better capabilities to fulfill this role. Christian women tend to accept a submissive attitude after marrying since their religion leads them to understand that this is their role in the relationship and that showing dominant characteristics would make them disrespectful of her husband and God, many come to leave their job for dedicate itself only to the care of the house and later of the children under the pretext that that sends the Bible.

Despite so many shadows, today there are women with the courage to call attention to religious authorities to reveal the injustices they commit. Around the world women have been carrying the feminist message to their churches, gradually eliminating the inequalities and excesses from which religion has collaborated.

Femicides are only the most extreme and perhaps the most explicit form of gender violence, but some religions or tribes perform extremely traumatic practices, such as female genital mutilation, almost always while they are still girls and against their will. Likewise, increasing in the control and aggression scale other religions give the power to send on the bodies of women who practice it, from their way of dressing to how they handle their sexuality, becoming executioners protected by the State that really really It is secular.

In addition to this we can emphasize that feminicide discriminates you by your status since it usually takes victims to those who are at the lowest of the social pyramid, for example prostitutes, poor women and belonging to minorities little listened to as indigenous populations. Part of this may be due to the fact that the most privileged classes have greater access to education which is the main weapon in the battle against femicides, since educated men are able to understand that women are their equals and an educated woman is valued And he knows that he does not deserve to be abused just for being a person.
