Ernest Hemingway’s inspiration
Introduction
"But men are not made for defeat," he said, "they can be destroyed but not defeat". This phrase is written by Ernest Heringway in his literary novel El Viejo y El Mar, which he writes in Havana, Cuba, home in which he lived for many years. He writes in 1951, inspired by Gregorio Fuentes, a half Canarian and half Cuban fisherman, who is later appointed Captain of the Yate El Pilar, which belongs to Hemingway. Gregorio was the companion of the American writer for many years in his adventures for the Caribbean Sea.
Developing
It is important to highlight that Gregorio was Hemingway’s inspiration when writing about Santiago’s character in the aforementioned work, such that the Pulitzer Prize would later be won in 1953 and the Nobel Prize in 1954. The brief story was first published in Life magazine in 1952, on September 1, a year after writing it. This story won a lot.
Since Hemingway uses a technique called "iceberg" that consists of not giving many descriptions of things, only gives little information so you can imagine what you want and go form as your own idea of the story he made. It only gives ‘the tip of the iceberg’ to know, so it is more fun and much more personal, since everyone enjoys their own way and is drawing different conclusions from those of the other readers. Hemingway wanted to be part of his country’s armed forces, but they didn’t accept him because his eyes were little bad.
He, insisting that he wanted to help his country in the war, went to Italy as an ambulance driver. But, in that same year, he had to return to the United States, since his two legs were injured when saving an injured soldier who needed help, and thus winning the silver medal for his value and courage when saving him. As we can see, Hemingway was a man with a courage and a very hard character, who loved sports and hunting, in addition to being a man who knew what he wanted and did not give up until he got it.
He always did his best to live his life as he wanted and did not let himself take anyone or anything, doing what he wanted. It is said that when Hemingway was little, his mother used to dress him as a woman and forced him to act as such, treating him as if it were a doll. But his game only lasted until he turned six, Hemingway was sure that that was not what he wanted for his life and decided not to pay attention to his mother and feel a deep hatred for her. That’s where he realized that a man can be destroyed but never defeated.
That is why this highlights in its history of El Viejo and the sea, wants to let people know what they have suffered or what happened to them, they can never be defeated."Our greatness is never falling, but getting up every time we fall."This phrase was said by Ralph Waldo Emerson, a American writer, philosopher and poet. And this is trying to say that men are not perfect, and that we are going to fall many times throughout our lives, but that we can get up every time we fall, and when we get up, improve ourselves to not commit againthe same mistake.
The most important and most important theme in the whole work was the persistence and perseverance of Santiago, which, although it happened to him everything in his adventure through the sea, both good and bad, he never gave up on spokenthat he has been so close to death. He was always thinking about positive and motivated to move forward until he finally wanted. He never hesitated his strength or his ability to overcome both swordfish and sharks, as well as water storms. Nor did he look for excuses to return home and finally be able to rest. In a part of the story, Santiago says: “What because of hand is this. Well, remember if you want.
Get a claw, it will not help you ”, wanting to say that nothing or anyone was going to stop it, nor its acalabrated hand even if a claw is completely made. Man can with whatever if he has something or someone to live, a motivation that makes them want to continue trying and trying to finally power. Motivation is what keeps us alive and wanting to continue living, without it, we would not have reasons to move forward and to the first bad thing that happened to us, we would kill each other, since we would feel as if we had nothing left.
conclusion
Santiago has a very strong motivation, and Hemingway makes us look too clear, since in the work, Santiago makes an excessive mention of how the boy would be there with him, to be able to talk to him about baseball, be able to laugh with himand be able to hug him. Santiago saw him as if he were his own son and wanted him as such, and likely, Manolin also loved Santiago as if he were his own father. Santiago’s love to Manolín was what kept him alive and the only thing he had left, since his wife was no longer with him for a long time.
