Introduction

Depression, along with other mental disorders, is a serious public health problem. The prevalence rate is high, increasing the risk of suicide and decreasing the quality of life. This anhedonia and feeling of dejection affects 350 million people in the world, being the most common in Latin America and the Caribbean, followed by anxiety, dystimia, compulsive obsessive behaviors, panic crisis, bipolar disorder and others. Psychological alterations such as these affect individuals at any time.

In Panama, 21% of minors are depressive, there are the highest percentage between the ages of 15-29 years and are not properly treated, drastically affecting their work, personal or school performance. Many believe that children and adolescents cannot present emotional disorders, but young people suffer from anguish and exhaustion at alarming rates. 

Unlike what is normally believed, not everyone is happy and free of emotional difficulties. It is they who absorb with agility the problematic situations that are in their environment and many times by fear they do not speak, thus initiating a deterioration in terms of their mental well -being. If not being treated on time, there is a danger of making problems worse.

Eating disorders are rarely only what we see superficially and, in most cases, they coexist with one or more problems;Common Depression, Anxiety and Compulsive Disorder. These concurrent diagnoses and eating disorders share an intricate and disconcerting relationship, in which one can cause, feed or cause the other.

Depression usually leads to eating disorders, but there is also evidence that these can cause this psychological state. Being severely low and malnourished, which is common in anorexia, causes physiological changes that negatively affect moods. People who develop food disorders feel like they are not good enough. They become obsessed with perfectionism. This belief begins to focus on what they eat, hiding in feeling of discouragement, anxiety and others after this. Often these patients have suffered many emotional traumas.

According to experts, diagnosing depression is relatively easy. But, finding an effective cure for this combination of food disorders can be a challenge. Currently, best practices regarding treatment include psychotherapy and psychopharmacological interventions. However, the mind-body connection is a growing area of research and interest in health professionals, since it relates to the symptomatology of these disorders. With more attention, research is beginning to suggest that an adequate diet and nutritional intervention could significantly reduce the personal and social effects associated with the disease that manages to affect physical and mental way.

Given the high increase in the use of technology (smartphones and social networks), perhaps using these tools as a way to improve diet and encourage an intake of fruits and vegetables can be effective. There is an increase in the number of individuals with greater curiosity in planning and preparing their meals;In spite of this, a rejection of aid and concealment still persists so it is convenient to address carefully from the beginning.

This study is aimed at providing general information regarding disorders in eating behavior to young people, relying on the idea that data about consequences could stop potential risk behaviors. It is essential to focus on aspects such as the pressure exerted by society on body image, since it derives in adolescents committing to restrictive diets and dangerous behaviors to achieve what they consider an ideal body.

With this research not only wants to publiccircumstances. Changing an individual’s diet and including healthier and nutritious options can be challenging. Encouraging, celebrating and forming salutiferous cooking and food behaviors could be beneficial especially when teenagers make the transition to being adults.
