Obesity is described as having excess fat in the body. An overweight person is one who exhibits excess body weight based on a particular height and is associated with being obese. A person becomes obese or overweight due to an imbalance in the intake and expenditure of calories that are obtained from food. There are health consequences that are associated with obesity. Some of the adverse health problems are the development os asthma, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, bone and joint problems, and increases the risk of cancer. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), the rate of childhood obesity has increased in the recent past. It further states that the percentage of childhood obesity between age 6-11 has grown from 6% to 18% over a period of 30 years. Additionally, it also indicates that obesity in adolescent age groups has increased by 15% from 5% thirty years ago (CDC, 2015). According to National Collaborative on Childhood Obesity Research (NCCOR), 7% of the obese children aged 5 to 17 had at least one cardiac disease, and 37% of them exhibited two or more cardiovascular risk factors (NCCOR, 2009). Some of the reasons elaborated by the NCCOR that are the leading causes of childhood obesity include physical inactivity and the emergence of high-calorie foods such as snacks and fast foods that bring about an imbalance in energy expenditure.
