The owl is the sovereign bird of the night. For many peoples it means mystery, intelligence, wisdom and knowledge. This has the ability to see in the dark, seeing what others do not see. The owl symbolizes reflection, rational and intuitive knowledge. In Greek mythology, Athena, the goddess of wisdom and war had an owl as a symbol. Athena was so impressed with the appearance of the owl that took him as his favorite bird.
Characteristic
- Half life. Lespecies big is 15 to 20 years. The little ones live less.
- Size. The size varies from 25 cm to 70 cm in length, while its weight is between 60 g and 4 kg.
- The females are generally bigger than males.
- Hygiene. Owls do not usually take bath, because being wet, they are difficult to fly due to the density of their feathers. But sometimes they choose to be in the rain.
- Feeding. Of adult birds: pieces of meat, insects such as grasshoppers, larvae, birds and little dead animals. Owls are not accustomed to being close to dead animals and can take long to get used to this diet. Of the young: the young feed on minced meat and cooked egg. Owls have the peculiarity of swallowing food at once.
- Habits. Live at night, sleep during the day, except some species that also live during the day. These animals feed at night.
- Care. Large cage, a minimum of 2 × 3 m alone or accompanied by a couple, with a wooden box with a hole where the owl can accommodate and make its nest. At the base of the box you must put sand and sawdust, a stick in a corner with shade where you can stand during the day. The owl cannot live with other birds, as it would attack them;even to other owls of other species: the greatest would kill and eat the smallest owl. If it were a couple, they can live together. The cage must also remain far from other bird cages, so that they do not see or hear the owl.
- Mating and reproduction. In nature the male approaches the female with a dam in the claws. If she accepts the gift, the mating is given. The female puts three to five eggs. Incubation time: 32 to 34 days. The offspring begin to fly from 64 to 86 days after being born. In captivity the reproduction is difficult.
- Observation: The exploitation and commercialization of this animal is prohibited by the Wildlife Protection Law, Law No. 5.149.
Curiosities
Most species remain in trees, but some owls make their nest in low grassland areas, next to trees. They dug on the ground vertically and then continue to sparing horizontally until the nest is placed in a place that is free of the predators. The male remains in the tree taking care of the nest, mainly during the day. Given the presence of a possible invader, the young can imitate snake sounds (similar), causing the aggressor to surrender to the attack. These birds have very large eyes, surrounded by a disc of feathers turned forward and have binocular vision (such as the human being).
They are animals with farsightedness, that is, they hardly see closely (a few centimeters), but from greater distances their vision is very good, mainly when there is little light. Despite the size of their eyes, they can’t move their eyeballs. His ears are not visible, but their auditory capacity is quite fine, better than that of other birds. They are able to hunt in the dark.Its plumage is soft and dense, they usually have dark colors mixed with white and/or yellow. There are cases of totally white owls such as the Nival owl (which lives in the North Pole).
