Book review duality between knowledge and imagination

Introduction

Talking about this book is between exciting and difficult. Exciting because I learned to read with this book (and the others of the author), and difficult, since he lives with me for fourteen years, being reread annually, the impact left by the first impression has been erased from my memory. However, I want to make it clear that the fact that I have read it so many times warns them that I love this book so much, so I already record that this review will be quite personal and perhaps a little long. Good. This book has had two stages for me. The first is that of my childhood, where my mother read it when I went with her to the library and already.

Developing

Then I read it to my school classmates to scare them with the dreary and truculent stories. The second is what we could call my ‘Dostoevski stage’, which was at the beginning of my adolescence when I read ‘the player’ and from there I could join more and more common characteristics that I found in Dostoevski and Quiroga, which made me couldUnderstand both the author and his stories and his characters. For those who are not aware of the author’s life, this was a man with a terrible life, surrounded by illness, deaths (especially suicides), abandoned, loneliness, a life that one can notice in his narration that marked himOn fire.

The characters are very murky, problematic, sparks, they often do not know how to communicate with each other and seem isolated from everything. The three words of the title are fulfilled to Rajatabla;Death is around almost all stories, madness is reflected dry and magnificently, and love is poured into stories of torrid passion, of sickly obsessions, painful breaking and, on a few occasions, in happy idiles. Prose is somewhat rough, using only the necessary words and synthesizing to the fullest. Quiroga goes to the grain and all stories have a very similar structure: characters presentation, setting, conflict, introspection of what the protagonist feels about it.

Brief explanations prior to the dissolution of the conflict, leads to an outcome. This can be tired, so unless the text caught you a lot, it may not be to read all the stories, but to give their time to each one. There is no bad story, since in general the level remains a lot, but there are some better than others, so to close I will name the ones I consider better (the book brings eighteen stories) and a brief comment about it: ‘The lonely’It is not a story of the most remembered in the book, but for me it is very good: it is sordid, and the coldness with which it is narrated, added to its brevity (three pages), make the brutality of history highly highlight.

‘Drift’, perhaps the best known story in the book. I cannot say anything, since it occupies only one sheet, but it is so dreary, so scary, so gore and cruel that it never stops impressing me. As Plus, he manages to surprise with an end that you already know from the first prayer. ‘The slaughtered chicken’ is simply unclean (in good sense: it achieves very well what it seeks to transmit from the title). It is oppressive, perverse and evil everything in him. Fascinating. I don’t know if the best in the book. ‘The feather pillow’ or how to make a pillow cause authentic dread. Totally ingenious and full of horror. ‘The shadow eyes’ (this together with the next two does not come out in some editions).

conclusion

To me the stories of misfortune, mentally disturbed and obsession in between I love if they are well made, and this is. ‘Artificial hell’ is the most grotesque I have read. The drug addiction is very well plasma and the main character is repulsive, while sad and tormented. One of my favorites, for not resorting to fantastic elements, but to delusions and mental torments. ‘The rabid dog’. The story of a man with rage who is killed by shotguns by his neighbors who find him howling him as a crazy climb to a tree (it is not spoiler, it is the first phrase of the story), is there anything sick and disturbing? I do not think so.
