Argumentative essay: Book of Life
Mary Beth, a tourist guide from the museum, takes a group of school detention students to a secret tour of the museum, counting them, with wooden figures, the history of a Mexican town called San Ángel of the Book of Life, which containsevery story of the world.
On the day of the dead, death, ruler of the land of the remembered, and Xibalba, ruler of the land of the forgotten, see Manolo Sánchez and Joaquín Mondragón competing for María Posada. They bet: if Maria marries Manolo, Xibalba will no longer interfere with mortal affairs, but if she marries Joaquín, Death and Xibalba will exchange kingdom. However, Xibalba cheats by giving Joaquin his medal of eternal life, which gives invincibility to the user.
One day, Maria is sent to Spain to become a more appropriate woman after releasing animals from a booth. Then, years later, the day Maria returns to San Ángel, Joaquín has become a hero with the help of the medal, but Manolo’s musical aspirations are repressed by her father Carlos, who trains him to be a bullfighter in thefamily tradition. In Manolo’s first run, defeat the bull but refuses to kill him, dismaying Carlos and the crowd but impressing Maria. That night, Maria is pressured by her father and mayor, General Ramiro Posada, to marry Joaquín for her protection of the king Bandit Chakal. María and Manolo profess their love before dawn, but they are interrupted when Xibalba sends their double -headed snake staff, to bite her and put her into a coma. Devastated by the apparent death of Mary, Manolo allows Xibalba to kill him, believing that he will meet with Mary in death.
In the land of the remembered, Manolo meets with his mother and his ancestral family. They travel to the Castle of Death, discovering Xibalba, now the ruler of the kingdom, who explains the bet and reveals with a lot of sufficiency that Maria did not die because it was only bitten once and, therefore, survived. However, Manolo was bitten twice and died. Furious but determined to return with Maria, Manolo travels to the cave of souls to get to death. Inside, he meets the candle manufacturer, the supervisor of mortal lives and the guardian of the book of life. The candles manufacturer sees that Manolo’s story in the book of life is blank and can be rewritten by himself, so he takes them to the land of the forgotten. They find death at Xibalba Castle and expose their traps. Furious, death gives a conference to Xibalba before offering a new commitment to Manol. Xibalba faces Manolo against a giant bull skeleton made of the skeletons of each bull killed by the Sánchez family, believing that this is its greatest fear.
Meanwhile, Maria has awakened her coma, she finds out about Manolo’s death and accepts Joaquín’s proposal. Chakal interrupts his wedding, who leads his army to San Ángel to find the medal, which was previously his. Chakal kills Carlos, who arrives at the land of those remembered on time to see Manolo’s fight. Manolo, realizing that his fear is actually being himself, refuses to fight and, instead, he sings an apology to the bull, appeasing him and touching everyone present (including: Xibalba and Carlos). Impressed, deities resurrect Manolo and send him to him and his family to San Ángel to protect him. Manolo is unconscious when Chakal is destroyed, but is protected by the medal, that Joaquín had slipped before. Joaquin returns it to Xibalba and decides to be a true hero, while Manolo and Maria are happily married while Xibalba and death reconcile.
In the present, Mary Beth ends the story and the astonished children leave the museum. Mary Beth and a security guard are revealed as death and Xibalba disguised. Candle Maker appears and encourages the public to write their own history.
