Antonia Coello Novello and his work in the public service

Antonia Coello Novello as an important and original person from one of the 21 Spanish -speaking countries because she was the first woman, and the first of Hispanic origin, who held the general arise position, (general surgeon) in the United States.

Childhood

Antonia was born on August 23, 1944 in Fajardo, Puerto Rico, and was the oldest of three brothers. He grew up under the raising of his mother, Ana Delia Flores, since her father died when Antonia was 8 years old. At birth, Antonia was diagnosed with congenital megacolon a disease that caused her a lot of pain and had to make many trips to the hospital during her childhood. Although at 8 years of age doctors told him that he had to undergo surgery to correct his problem, Antonia was forced to wait 10 more years for surgery. This marked his life and promised that he would study medicine so that no other person had to suffer what she suffered.

Education

Antonia’s mother, who was a teacher and director of a high school, instilled in her children the importance of education. Antonia was always a good student and graduated from high school at age 15. He studied later at the University of Puerto Rico in Río Piedras, where he graduated with a bachelor of Science (science) in 1965. His Medicine career was made at the University of Puerto Rico in San Juan, and received his doctorate in Medicine in 1970. After graduating he married Joseph R Novello and moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan, to continue his medical studies, where she specialized in pediatrics at the University of Michigan’s Medicine. Antonia was the first woman to receive the "University of Michigan Pediatrics Department of the Year" (practitioner of the year of the Pediatrician Department of the University of Michigan). Antonia made his residence at Hospital of the University of Georgetown Washington D University.C. until 1976. He specialized in pediatric nephrology, which treats renal, urinary or high blood pressure ailments in children.

Public service

Antonia stood out for her public service as a health administrator, as a pediatrician, activist against domestic violence and public education about AIDS and the effects of smoking tobacco. It served the country as Vice Admiral (Vice Admiral) in the public Health Service Comissioned Corps, and served 4 years as General of the United States (United States General Surgeon), from 1990 to 1993. Antonia was also Commissioner of Health for the State of New York (Health Commissioner for the State of New York) from 1999 to 2006. During his career, Antonia served in various university committees, research and solution to pediatric diseases, and public services. His great contribution to the approval of the Organ Transplantation Procurement Act of 1984 (Act of obtaining organ transplantation of 1984) is accredited during his work as a member of the Untited State Senate Committee on Labor and Human Resources (Committee of the United States Senatein labor and human resources) under the leadership of Chairman Orrin Hatch. In 1994, Antonia was induced to the National Women’s Hall of Fame

Challenges

Antonia was accused and in 2009 of having used the personnel of the United States Department of Health for personal and abuse of authority. Although Antonia declared himself innocent of most of the positions, he declared guilty of a minor position for falsifying documents related to the duties of a colleague, and reduced the charges to this incident. Was sentenced to pay US $ 22.500 in restitution, a fine of US $ 5.000, and to do medical community service for 250 hours. After the sentence, Antonia declared that he had been the victim of false testimonies by a colleague, and his lawyer declared that Antonia had simply committed a documentation file error.
