Analysis of a protagonist Hester Prynne in ‘The Scarlet Letter’

The story begins with the public trial of Hester Prynne for the Puritans in Boston. As at the beginning of the 17th century. Her husband did not come to the United States, but he had an illegitimate daughter accused of adultery. Hester was convicted of carrying the scarlet letter "A" for adultery in his chest to show his shame forever. Although the judge, the magistrate and the priest repeatedly questioned Hester to find out who was the father of her Pearl’s daughter, the woman refused to reveal him. Over the years, even given the adversity imposed by a severe, rigid and inflexible person, Hester has continued to show courage, dignity, extraordinary loyalty and resignation, who will even make him admire and hate the community. The reason I like this book is the way in which Hawthorne and Hester Prynne portrayed that time, which surprised me. This is a short book. We basically divide the narrative into two parts: the first part is the condemnation of the protagonist. Her courage, kindness of her, caution and nobility of her makes her one of the unforgettable characters. He focuses more on his father’s suffering: he did not admit his suffering due to lack of calm and courage, and Hester’s old husband, Roger Chillingworth, planned to retaliate against him when he arrived when he arrived. However, despite his important role, he never neglected the description of the landscape and even introduced a certain symbolic meaning: although the bostonia represent the shadow, oppressive and impartial prejudices of a closed community, the external environment and the green forests, the currents clear and the primitive purity of its external environment are a real and natural release, far from any absurd dogma established by civilization.

The scarlet lyrics

In the Scarlet Writing period, there were no feminist in the modern sense, but Hester’s character combined the traditional concept of female behavior with the perspective of rebellion and free thought, and could be considered a pioneer of philosophy and later feminist feminist. When readers met her, Hester was described as a beautiful new mother who looked like the Virgin Mary. The Virgin Mary is the last symbol of female piety, but as Hester, she is a woman who gave birth out of marriage. Hester also violated the convention, but in the case of it, it was implicit that she had sex to entertain, not only to reproduce.

She refused to name the baby’s father, challenging her community even more. Since the authority in her society is human, this rejection is the only power that Hester can affirm. The authorities can punish her, but they cannot force her to reveal her secrets. Hester states that she has the only power, that is, the power to keep secrets, to show women her life. Hester’s response to her punish.

She is a pious mother, and the skill. However, the condition of her from her single worker is totally responsible for the well -being of her daughter, and she can also raise pearls freely according to her own wishes, which makes Hester a model into a model of female self-sufficiency. Similarly, the isolation of her and independence allowed her to question what most people assume: "The scarlet letter is her passport to the areas that other women do not dare to step on". She discovered that many expectations and ideas that govern people’s behavior actually ‘there is no purpose beyond social control.’

In particular, Hester realized that women are unfairly treated and, often, they carry unhappy lives: ‘Before women can assume any responsibility, the nature of the opposite sex must be completely changed. This seems to be fair and appropriate position ’. When Hester asked Dimmesdale to leave New England and begin a new life with her and Pearl, she showed feminist trends, but finally returned to the community to show a more appropriate statement of independence and personal freedom.

While talking with Dimmesdale, Hester started the bright red lyrics and removed her hat to unleash her hair, which symbolized her rejection of society’s attempts to control her. The scarlet brand is a punishment specifically designed for her, but any respected woman at that time would wear a hat, so Hester rejected all the ways in which women are governed by patriarchy: ‘their gender, her youth and her beautycompletely restore ‘. However, despite this rebel behavior, when Hester voluntarily returned to New England and continued using the bright red letters, the novel ended. This does not seem to be an act of feminist rebellion. But Hester continued his feminist self-determination by using this letter by choice instead of obligation. While he continued to support other women with community difficulties, he extended their personal emancipation to other people who suffer from patriarchy. In the life you choose, Hester embodies a strong idea of the women’s agency and equality.

In conclusion, it is a classical literary novel from North America, a sad and difficult story focused on a melancholic character, portrays the innate hypocrisy of society, although the origin is more subtle, but the results are not many and the best, thisIt is an indispensable and sufficient reading.
