Academic plagiarism and academic honesty

Plagiarism is when one person copy the work or ideas of another without their authorization, without specifying where they come and pretending to present them as their own, staying with all the merit. Plagiarism does not consist only of copying a job as is, but also occurs when not cite or do it incorrectly, do bibliographic or paraphrase references badly. Various types of plagiarism can be differentiated:

-Intentified: It is when the person deliberately and being totally conscious decides to copy the ideas of another.

-Not intentional: when someone did not intend to plagiar.

-Cyberplage: “Cyberplage, due to the extension of the use of the Internet and information technologies, constitutes one of the most frequent problems regarding the violation of authorship rights. When you do a job based on information obtained on the Internet without linking it or citing those who have created it, you are committing cyberplage. It is very important to keep in mind that all the information obtained on the Internet is protected by the Intellectual Property Law, as well as the rest of the works ”(University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, 2019).

– Autoplage: “It is understood as a hoax that derives from multiple use, without prior knowledge and authorization of the teacher for which a job is being done, of another own academic work, identical or similar. That is, when the student uses for different courses a work for which he has already obtained credits or has been evaluated, or will be evaluated and obtain credits in any university activity. To this fault applies the same sanctions as to plagiarism ”(Faculty of Communications UC, 2020).

PlagiarIt is identified that it is plagiarism this has consequences: in a university, for example, they suspend a job, but going beyond, if it is something more serious than an academic work, it can end in courts and even paying fines for a crime against propertyintellectual.

In the academic field, plagiar. Academic honesty gives credibility to the student and his work, which is respectful of copyright, and allows him to avoid the consequences of plagiarism, as a suspense. Many students plagiate at the beginning of their careers for really ignoring that it is plagiarism and how to avoid it, for this it is important to teach them how to cite, reference and the consequences of copying other people.

In conclusion, plagiarism and academic honesty are two indivisible realities, since complying with one is synonymous with dealing with the other, and it is the student’s task to choose which way to follow in their studies and in their life, always attending to the consequences.
