Over the years abortion has been a controversial issue, in which several ideas have been shared about whether the fetus is considered a human or if the fetus is just a group of cells with any value. Abortion is the termination of pregnancy, regardless of its cause, before the "fetus" is prepared for life abroad. In Mexico, abortion is not legal, consequently 100% of abortions are clandestine. Clandestine abortion for most is insecure, which puts the mother at risk. Compared to the past years, the abortion of women between 15 and 21 years is drastically increasing.
To know the opinion of the people on this controversial issue, I surveyed different parts of the Metropolitan Area of Monterrey in which I obtained different results, depending on the town. The survey was intended to find the percentage of people who believe that abortion must be legalized and which does not. Apart I wanted to find the variables that can affect their opinion, be it their economic situation, education, attention of parents, religion, etc.
In Monterrey and in San Jerónimo 90% of the inhabitants are against abortion, everyone believes in some religion, some study and others work, live with their two parents and more than 75% have an economic situation of the middle and average class high. On the other hand in San Pedro, 30% is in favor of abortion, more than half believe in a religion, some study and others work, some live with a single father, but 95% have a middle-high and high class economy. Which we can infer that the economic situation and the attention of the parents towards the child can vary in the opinion you have of abortion.
To have more opinions on the subject, interview a national organization in favor of the legalization of abortion in Mexico. The arguments that gave me because abortion must be made, there are less insecure procedures for mothers, therefore there are less maternal deaths. There is social justice, the example that gave me was, “rich women can travel to any part of the country or other countries to carry out safe and quality procedures while poor women die in insecure procedures because they cannot pay for safe procedures.”Health professionals will be taught to do the abortion procedure. The State has the obligation to satisfy the inputs to give quality services and the last argument was that women have the possibility of deciding to be mothers or not.
For this organization, its definition of the fetus is a group of cells since, 77% of abortions in Mexico City Abortions are made before 8 weeks of pregnancy, the embryo is not a person yet, if it is not a group of cells that are barely forming. The recommendation they give to people who cannot raise a child for economic reasons is that the raising of a child demands many things: not only financial resources, also raising skills, emotional maturity, time, home, family, etc. Children have the right to be born desired and enjoy a quality life. International evidence shows that when children are not desired or grow without the minimum conditions to enjoy proper development and growth, they are more likely to get sick, to have antisocial and criminal behaviors that manifest throughout their lives.
The risks that a woman runs when aborted depends on the weeks of pregnancy of the fetus, if the procedure is carried out before 8 weeks the risk of death is 0.1 per thousand events. If the procedure is carried out between weeks 11 and 12 is 1.4 per thousand events. The age of women and their health also influences. They believe that the way to stop maternal deaths is to legalize abortion since in Mexico City, almost 215 thousand procedures have been treated and no death has been recorded.
One of the greatest controversies in the subject of abortion, is whether the man has the right to comment on the subject, which answered the following. “Man has no right to decide a woman’s future, the decision to interrupt a pregnancy or is not exclusive to women. Not from the couple, of the Fathers, of the Church, of the Government."
The last question was about what you would tell a person who cannot raise a child but wants to continue with pregnancy. Which I answer that it is not correct to convince someone to abort or continue pregnancy, it is a personal decision. “Our organization seeks to accompany women’s decisions, regardless of what they are and provide necessary information, based on evidence and free of myths."
To find information in the religious sphere about abortion, I read the book of "Bioethics, philosophical-theological considerations on a current topic" in which I gave me the religious and philosophical perspective on the subject. In the philosophical field, we all once were that "group of cells". Biologically life does not begin to be conceived but also in the ineffable mystery of the person. Abortion is to end someone we could have been, but that we would have aware of it. In the theological field it is simple, from ancient times those who aborted and committed infanticide were condemned. The punishments depended a lot on the times in which the crimes were committed, but there were consequences.
After interviewing this person, personally it did not seem that the answers have been convincing enough. Some arguments seemed illogical, which makes me think that many organizations that want to legalize abortion, are not sufficiently prepared or there are not many arguments in favor of abortion. When analyzing the results of the survey conducted in the Monterrey metropolitan area, I could infer that the town and the economic situation do not influence their opinion on abortion. But, the attention that parents give to children and education are variables that drastically change your way of thinking.
